Would a car suffer irrepuable damage if abandoned for 6mths.

Got offered an 2006 ford for free by a mate. Wondering if it's worth getting a new battery and new tyres, basically putting money into it. It hasn't moved in 6 months. Don't want all these problems rising up from rust to an engine worn down from lack of use.

Should be fine. I wouldn't godiving in buying a battery and tires.

Jump start it and drive it and if the battery stays up, then keep it. If it doesn't stay up then get a battery.

Tyres are probably fine, a quick visual check will tell a lot. If they look ok, set the pressures and drive on.

6 months isn'ta terribly long time.

As Toyotafanboi says should be fine after 6 months. I spent a few years in Oz for work and my car would be sat up for 6-7 months at a time. Be careful on first drive as brakes will have a bit of rust/corrosion on the discs, so maybe fine a quiet stretch of road where you can brake hard a few times to clean them before attempting a longer run at any speed. Let it idle for a while before moving, let the engine oil get around the engine. Should be 100%.
