SUV upgrade for MIL

Mother in law is looking to change/upgrade her current car. Suzuki Vitara 2017 (not many toys but from the top of my head it has a reversing camera, cruise control, sat nav, BT, apple carplay). Basic spec whatever model that is/was. Budget is 25k maxing at 30k.

    Criteria are:
    - Newer
    - tall (likes the height on the road and the easy access)
    - golf clubs must fit in the boot - this is a deal breaker
    - at least the same "toys" as the Vitara.
    - economical (about 20k a year, mostly short drives with the odd 100-150km drive a couple of times a month).
    - back seats would rarely be used. Grand children may need to go in the car, but it's not happened yet

Given her driving, and my interest in electric cars, I was trying to find a PHEV for her, rather than a pointless MHEV or ye olde HEV, but they seem just a bit out of budget.
New Vitara seems like a nothing upgrade to me.

Biggest issue i've had when looking is to know whether golf clubs will fit or not.

Doesn't seem like that fits into the <30k price range with Apple Carplay and reversing camera etc.

    New Captur or 2008?

If she likes the Vitara then don’t over complicate things :)

It does seem like she’s just coming up the years, but maybe that’s al she wants to do?

Vitara seems a waste to me though. It's got a bit of a facelift inside and out, but still looks kinda dated.

Think she's going to checkout the 2008 over the coming days.
She mentioned the qashqai too but IMO it's not the car for her either.

Qashqai is a bit bigger and is a bit outdated at this stage too.

Not a SUV, more like a hatch/mpv cross but a nice high driving position

    BMW 225XE, 40 KM EV range, 0-60 in 6,5 s,

    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202009043321816?onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=Used&fuel-type=Hybrid%20%E2%80%93%20Petrol%2FElectric%20Plug-in&year-from=2020&advertising-location=at_cars&make=BMW&radius=1500&sort=price-asc&postcode=l211la&page=1

    vrt around 2 k

7 months old for 27 k or less, there 40 something here new.

Measure the clubs, I will check if they fit

It's not really a high driving position. It is very similar in height to me Golf. Yes the seat is a little higher but nothing of note.

What about a Toyota CHR. It is a hybrid and not a PHEV but it a good size, nice driving position. Decent spec. Good on fuel. More or less ticks all the boxes. The back seats are decent and the boot is decent as well so should fit golf clubs, even if you drop seat?

Yep Seat Ateca will do the job. I have one+ adore it. Boot bigger than any other I seen in that range of SUV + mine has rear camera + android/ apple play.

You said newer not new so you would definitely get a 191 for under 30,000.

Have a look on Carzone for an idea + visit a Seat dealer if you can to view them.

New new isn't a must. In fact she gets great satisfaction out of buying a demo model and saving a few quid, so a 2020 with a few miles on it wouldn't be an issue. There's a few C-HRs within budget, though i'd have to see what spec they come with.

FYI, UK import isn't an option. Thanks though.

Can't agree with you more. The dealer she's visiting (unless I change her mind) is on my list of "i'll never do business with them". I've had bad luck/experience with Kearys Hyundai, and while this would be the Nissan dealer I can't overlook the bad experience of the company as a whole.

Make sure it is a 2020MY car as Applecarplay wasn't fitted prior to this.

Checked out the quashqai, 2008 and chr today. Quashqai is grand, does what it needs to do, but that's it. Nothing to get excited about. Pano roof was pretty cool though when I noticed it.

2008 is a pretty car, lovely interior, but was cut short when the golf clubs wouldn't fit into it.

Chr is sitting pretty at first choice. Had a look at a 201 sol version but likely go for the Luna sport. She won't get use of the additional toys in the sol so no point. Needs a second test drive (was caught im time today) to check it out a bit better. Completely forgot to put the boot down in an "overtaking" test.

All depends on the numbers though.

If you’re looking at the CHR, surely the new Juke is worth a look?

    Can't handle golf clubs.

Top tip, when looking at the CHR again open the boot and ask your mum to close it ;)

We had to modify a strap to fit the boot of my mums CHR as it opens too high for her.

Also, no point mashing the accelerator when it comes to over taking, it takes a bit of getting used too to find the acceleration sweet spot but it is there. If you mash the pedal the engine will just rev hard in my experience.

Ah. I knew the Juke has a bigger boot, but probably badly shaped for clubs.

Great tips. It was I who closed the boot so I'll get her to check that out next time she sees one.

We went straight up a bit of an incline from the dealership, and yeah, it revved hard going up the hill, but cant say there was huge progress with all that noise. It was actually quite loud getting up to 100kph as a result. I think she likes the car enough to overlook that, but it'll all come down to price.

It's about driving style as it's a CVT gearbox not a traditional auto. My mother was the same but once I explained it to her she adjusted her driving and now gets on great with it.
