Asbestos!

    Hi

We found a small pile of asbestos roofing in our garden when we moved in about 10y ago. Being broke we wrapped it up in thick plastic and let it be. However we now want the space it has been occupying and are looking to get it removed.

It's a about 50kg worth. We have been quoted €435+ VAT which seems pretty expensive. Still waiting on other quotes.

But was just wondering does that sound about right when the job of removing and wrapping it has already been done?

Is there a cheaper way of doing it? We've just ring some of the asbestos removing companies.

    TIA

That sounds cheap in my head.. there's a lot of it and it's a specialised job

Get a specialist in to sort it.
Death through asbestos's poisoning is slow and horrific.
Ive seen someone die from this so really get an expert in to sort it.

Absolutely no need for that post.

1: the material in her garden does not, as it is, pose a health risk to anyone
2: even if the OP was exposed to the dust that is the issue, it might take 40 years to take effect

OP: the quote seems reasonable, the one concern I would have is that the firm is legitimate and not someone who will just dump it in some scenic spot.

    asbestos roofing

Had what amounted to a large garage roof come down on my ground. Garage itself was full of rubbish too.

Hired the biggest skip they do and slung Everything in it. Guy came and picked it up. Took it away. No drama.

Did you declare the content or just needlessly and recklessly expose the recycling guys to the asbestos when it all gets dumped out.
    Nice:(

it is preposterous having to bring in a specialist company to remove a small amount, in UK you can just wrap in plastic and bring to waste disposal centre where they deal with it

50kg is just a few roofing sheets worth.
As long as you don't go cutting it up with an angle grinder or other power saw, it is perfectly harmless.

If you can move it yourself without risk of damaging it then you can bring it to a licenced disposal location yourself. Given that you have already removed it and wrapped it, you can probably move it safely. [I believe any damage to it could be dangerous, not just going at it with a power tool.]

"In the case of asbestos products where the fibres are tightly bound (for example, in asbestos cement roofs), and the material is in good condition, specialist asbestos removal contractors may not always be necessary. "

"The following waste facilities are licensed by the EPA to accept asbestos waste:

Veolia Environmental Services Technical Solutions Limited, Corrin, Fermoy, Co. Cork. Waste Licence Register Number: W0050-2, Tel: (025) 42944.
Rilta Environmental Limited, Block 402, Grant's Drive, Greenogue Business Park, Rathcoole, Co. Dublin. Waste Licence Register Number: W0192-03, Tel: (01) 401 8000.

"Once the asbestos is removed safely, it should be wrapped in heavy gauge polythene bags, and labelled asbestos.

There must be strict adherence to any instructions given by a local authority or waste collection permit holder regarding the packaging of the waste for removal.

Asbestos waste must only be surrendered to local authority waste collectors or to an authorised waste collection permit holder."

To be honest I can't remember. We did get someone to take it for a little less than the original quote. Maybe €350 + VAT. We just rang around the companies registered to do this work.

Had work done by these guys last year, best price I could find, professional and quick.
    https://www.eetl.ie/
I had about 25 sheets of 8x2' and wasnt that much more expensive than what your being charged if memory serves me right.
But I think your issue might be a minimal cost issue, i.e even if you had 150kgs, it would probably be in and around the same kind of money.

But definitely give the guys in https://www.eetl.ie/ and see if they can help
