How will today's results affect next year's CAO?

Hi, I'm unfamiliar with the CAO as my eldest will only be sitting the Leaving Cert in 2021 ( I guess!) I'm delighted that the results today seem to be very good across the board, but it's raised a question.
Could a student, who has done better than expected, turn down a place in college now, and decide to wait until next year to apply for a higher points course ? I'm thinking perhaps if a student had ruled out teaching, engineering etc., due to not expecting to achieve the points, but as they now have got the higher points, might they put off college until next year, and apply for these courses? Reason I ask, is could this have the knock on affect of rising the CAO points even higher for next year - which would make things unbelievably difficult for the current 6th year students who are already suffering for having missed so much of 5th year. Best wishes to all who got their results today.
