BMW 5 series touring, Audi A6 Avant or Merc E Class Estate

Going to change the car in the next few months. Probably going to the UK to bring in an estate 2018/19. (5 series, A6 or E class)

    Total budget circa €35k.

Any thoughts or advice? I just prefer the practicality and looks of estates.

Personal favourite is the a6 but having driven all 3 of the current models of what you're looking for (although all were saloons) there's not a clear winner. Depends on personal preference. BMW will probably win out on handling and sportiness, audi in interior and merc in comfort.
But they're all comfortable, nice interiors and decent to drive.
If I go diesel in my next car it will be a 2018 a6 avant, if I decide to move from diesel it will be a 5 series.

I brought in an E Class Estate earlier this year. It was 2016 and the new model whereas the a6 and 5 series in the same budget were the old model.
I'm very happy with it... puts a smile on my face every day!!
The boot is massive, think it's the biggest of the 3. And there's even more room underneath where the spare wheel would be (it's on run flats). As the previous poster said, very comfortable to drive, but loads of power too when you need it. Looks-wise the AMG line is a big step up.

If you want Android Auto/Apple Carplay make sure its specced with Comand Online.

Would you add a V90 on to your list? That was the other one I was considering.

Yes if I stick with diesel it will be an A6. Ideally if the BMW 530e touring was available I would get it.
I have a 2014 A6 avant s-line so I do like Audi. But the drivers experience of the BMW is appealing.
My wife has an eclass coupe. So while I like the e class estate I’m not sure if I want 2 e class variants in the household.

Well you're the same as me so, I've 2014 A6 s line too although mine is saloon. I've had 5 series for 10 years before the a6 and the drive wouldn't be something that would sway my thinking anymore, they're not sports cars. They're among the biggest saloons you can get. So my decision is swayed by looks these days and I think the a6 looks best. 3 nice looking cars though and like them all.
I've recently got a 2nd labrador so will be going avant next, plus I think they look great on new model. At the moment I either cover seats or fold back seats flat (which is not ideal).
Can you get a nice avant s line in new model for 35k from UK yet?

Funny I’m about to pick up a Labrador puppy in a few weeks. Yes the Avant is great for dogs.

I probably could get a new shape A6 40tdi on the road in Ireland for around 35k. Although I’d want the s-line and ideally a sunroof.

I seem a late model 2018 (old shape) A6 Avant but the 2.0TFSI petrol model it was a Quattro and high spec. 250bhp. Not sure what the vrt would be like. But interesting car.
    Anyway I’ll keep looking.

Not in the same class as these cars at all...

Personally for me I would be waiting a few years and looking at the PHEV A6 avant thats just been released, looks like a great car!

I change every 2 or 3 years anyway. So prefer to change now.

I have driven one and it is a good car. But I’m just not a big Volvo fan.

You may want to consider the A6 is front wheel drive, unless you get the quattro, whereas the 5 Series and E Class are both rear wheel drive.

Not sure if that will apply within your budget but bmw has 3 yrs service across UK and NI/IE. Audi if memory serves well last year you've got warranty in UK/NI only. You can get 5 Touring Xdrive which is 4wheel drive.

Those A6s are not well built for the money involved
    Lovely looking car and all

If your lab is used to sitting on a seat and, possibly, putting its head out the window, it’s not going to be happy in the boot! (Speaking as the guardian of a golden retriever).

Head never out the window, I just don't have them open. There's 2 of them now anyway I'd say they'll be fine. Either way, I actually prefer the avant to the saloon to be honest, just think it suits the A6
