'Front' of house

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows where, for planning /avoiding planning purposes, is considered to be the front of a house?

I would like to build a 40sq meter extension onto the side of my bunglow. The house is built perpendicular to the laneway it is on, so the gable end faces the road. I would like to build on the gable at the other end.

So long question short, is the front of the house the elevation that faces the road or the one which houses the front door? I hope this makes sense!

    Thanks in advance

    A photo may help.
Usually, its what faces the public road. In my opinion.
