Mobile Phone Switch-over Timeline

I plan to switch from Tesco Mobile to GoMo after my current contract expires, but as a non-tekkie, I'd appreciate advice on what to do and when.
It's two years since I last switched and I recall it was a bit of a hassle at the time.
My contract expires on October 4th. I need to give Tesco 30 days notice, but I also need to do the switch-over whilst the number is still operational.
When should I order the GoMo sim, and when should I arrange the switch-over? Will Tesco let me switch before the contract expires so that I can port the number?
A timeline of what I should do and when I should do it would be much appreciated, I'd prefer not to feck things up and lose the connection, or the number!

Once your contract is completed, you are no longer required to give notice or liable to pay any penalty.
    • During September, call Tesco and confirm your contact end date. (you don't need to say you are leaving as such).
    • Confirm your phone is unlocked - if not get it unlocked/ request the NUC from Tesco. This can take 2 weeks for some models.
    • If you are out of the contract on October 4th - Order the GoMo sim card then. (don't order in September, as you will be billed for the month)
    • Pick a porting date in the future when purchasing the sim.
    • When the sim arrives, move the porting schedule sooner if it suits.
    • Porting should take place within that time selected if the account details are entered correctly.
    • Once the Tesco sim dies, then enter the GoMo sim into the phone.
    • Your number will be kept, and now transferred to the new GoMo sim card.
    • Bin the Tesco sim.
    • You will receive a final bill from Tesco.

Posting the GoMo FAQ thread which has a lot of feedback which you may find useful.

Excellent detailed reply, and much appreciated. One last query....are you saying that my Tesco phone will keep working after the 30 day notice expires, until the number is ported to GoMo?

Yes, it will roll on monthly until you cancel/port away. You just wont be in a fixed contract.

That's a relief lol. I was concerned that my phone would switch off at midnight on the last day of my notice, and I couldn't work out how I'd switch over in time. Well, I did say I wasn't a tekkie. Thanks once more, Boards to the rescue once again!

You are still talking about notice, if you do give termination notice and fail to port before that time expires your phone will be disconnected and you will be unable to port the number to a new network, you may also permanently lose your phone number by doing this.

You should NOT cancel your account directly with Tesco, the porting process that you initiate through the new network does this automatically.

Once you are out of your fixed contract period you should only be billed by Tesco up to the porting date. If you try to port before the end of a contract the network may refuse the port or they will bill you for the remainder of the fixed contract.

Thanks for the further info. Just to be 100% sure then:

    1) I let the contract expiry date pass (4th Oct), don't contact Tesco, and do nothing else before then (except order my GoMo sim circa early October).
    2) As soon as the new sim arrives, I commence the porting process.

    Two points for clarification:
Do I need to confirm with Tesco that my phone will be unlocked, if not, when does that happen?
At what stage do I swap sims?
    Thanks in advance!

If port was done on 3rd of October, that wouldn't matter, would it?

You could ask Tesco to move your number to PAYG when contract ends...ask now if that can be done. That will ease the pressure on having to coordinate everything to one date. It will also allow you to try out Gomo without having to port straight away if Gomo coverage turns out to be less than expected.

Have you looked at other networks plans? 48 have a new plan from next week similar to Gomo for 9.99 (data allowance is 40GB which is less than Gomo but might be enough depending on your usage). 48 coverage is same as Tesco (whether that's good or bad will determine if 48 is an option). You could order a SIM from 48 to try it out for a week for free...it's PAYG so no commitment. Do that now if you want to look at an alternative to Gomo.

    To summarise...
    - Do NOT cancel with Tesco, let the new network handle the switch when Tesco contract ends unless you decide to move to PAYG with Tesco on 4th October...you would then have some breathing space to try out Gomo or 48 or any other network before porting your number.

    - Request unlock code for handset, do that now to get the process started.

    - (Optional) Order 48 SIM
