Returning to old company as a contractor

I took redundancy from my previous employer pre Christmas. I haven’t worked since , COVID got in the way and I was on job seekers.

This same company now contacted me and want me to complete a piece of work, circa 6 months contract. This means I would have to set myself up as self employed etc. Happy to go back for a bit to be honest but...

If in 6 months time my contract ends....and I need to go back on jobseekers....would it be frowned upon by revenue because I went back to my old employer after taking redundancy?

    Anyone any thoughts?

    Maura

    Go for it.

However, there are costs in contracting. Make sure you get paid a proper daily rate, not your old salary. Consider setting up a consulting company, easier to manage tax affairs. Get an accountant.

    No.

Revenue wont care. Just research the pay side of things as a self employed contractor. Your rate has to be enough to cover your annual leave, bank holidays, sick pay, christmas etc. My wife did contracting for about 18 months and found the christmas strange as she was short almost 10 days pay as the company was closed so she wasnt paid for those days.

I'm speaking out of ignorance here as I have no idea how jobseekers works, but I would imagine revenue and the jobseekers folks would be happy you were offered and took a job. Why wouldn't they be? Everything sounds above board.
