    Hi all,
Recently brought in a car from UK and went past a speed van doing over the speed limit today. I am still waiting to do the VRT so the car still has UK reg. I have the car insured too. Is it possible I get penalty points or a fine? Thanks

You won't get penalty points unless you have a UK licence but may get a fine depending if the seller chooses to supply your details to the police.

Also you have to assume that perhaps the camera was not active at the time or you may have been under the limit.

So you have car in Ireland driving around but haven’t done the VRT?

    Correct?

When should you have done the VRT?

You have 7 days to make an appointment for VRT from when it enters the state, registration must be complete within 30 days of vehicle entering the state.

It'll probably bounce around between the UK and back to Ireland when the UK owner rejects/redirects it. It's one of those things that I'd only worry about it when it lands on your door. There is a likelihood it will end up with you but no one can give you a firm answer, depends how the wheels of bureaucracy turn.

Yes but plenty of people do not do either and can drive around for months on UK reg till they are caught. Just checking if that is case?

If not then OP has nothing to worry about

Revenue and a UK speeding fine have no connection to each other. Stop giving the OP reason for unnecessary worry.

Read the original post. Its not a UK speeding fine. My understanding is the car is a UK import but the speeding fine is in Ireland

Earlier this year I forgot to pay M50 toll on UK car ...was detected on M50 toll camera and the previous UK registered owner received the bill and gave them my details. Penalty was only a few Euro, but all subsequent bills, and penalty payments would have gone to previous owner so he passed on my particulars..

On the VRT / insurance issue always make sure the car has a valid UK MOT. I have brought in a good few cars from UK and in the event of a claim the insurers will take a dim view of MOT free cars and try to wrangle out of settlement.

Insurance companies here have to legally report any car to Revenue once it's insured by them for 42 days here on a foreign plate so that catches up with them too.

Most will actually not insure a UK reg car for more than 30 days. How do people manage to drive UK cars for several months in Ireland?

I've had a car here since mid July. Its been impossible to get a VRT date until last week, my guess is NCTS staff have been focusing on the NCT backlog

i think he means he was possibly caught in Ireland .

Maybe people purchase british insurance but continue driving on a uk plate here.

Or maybe they just don't bother insuring it here.

How do people drive around in cars in Ireland with no insurance?

I know one guy who had bought UK car, on ferry back got loads of the little tags Irish Ferries hang on the mirror so kept changing it once it looked old. Drove around for ages. No idea about insurance etc but his plan when stopped was to say he was just off ferry

It is likely the OP will get away with it.

Oh Dear . . . . . . Anyone driving a UK car imported since lockdown will know that the VRT people did not return to work when the NCT folk did. Not sure why...... They might be "special". I was at NCT center on Saturdat with a vehicle imported months ago. They were closed till recently and didn't mention the import date.

So there you go. Many imports came in during lock down.

Hahaha what a stupid plan. Does the guy honestly think that if he is stopped by Revenue or the Guards they will accept proof of him importing the car by seeing a ferry tag? There aren't too many people who agree that VRT is a worthy cost of motoring but this idiot deserves all the taxes and penalties that he will (hopefully) get.

If first time stopped then yes with the guards, possibly more doubtful with revenue - if they demand ferry tickets.

Would make it a magnet for car thieves assuming car has luggage and things of value to rob from boot.
