VW Jetta rear door won't open from the inside

    Hi all,

Pretty much as the title says. The rear passenger door on my 2012 Jetta won't open from the inside. Works fine from the outside.

I have been able to do some basic trouble shooting but am stuck after that so would appreciate any suggestions.

I took off the inside panel and can see the metal cable connected to the inside door handle. This is tensing as expected when the handle is pulled.

I can follow that cable past a rubber cover near the latch and also see it tensing there also. I am stuck at this point.

The inside door handle isn't meeting any resistance.

Any thoughts on what the issue might be (mechanical/electrical) or how to troubleshoot further. Thank you

Needs a new door lock, super popular fault with them. Super expensive too, around €180 from a main dealer iirc, second hand ones are a bit of a gamble for the same reason.

Just anecdoatally, had a total failure on the Passat door, replaced it with a new but "cheaper" alternative part. Worked grand then went inoperative again within 3 months. Not sure if I got an OEM or main dealer at that point but it is not a job I would advise going cheap on.
It took an hour of pulling handles , banging door with a rubber mallet and pushing my body against the door to take tension off the latch before it opened again and I still had to do the job at that stage.
