    Hi all,

Anyone with any info it would be greatly appreciated. I inherited 6 acres in rural Galway a few years back. Recently granted planning on it. The other half has some horses so we plan to have a few fields but the problem is the area is very open and quite bleak, especially in winter. Nothing but walls and old sheds as far as you can see.

Ideally I would love to plant trees all around the parimeter and even some in the garden and through the land. I’ve no idea of how much acreage that would make up but I’m wondering is there any grant you can get to plant trees like this or is this purely for your own personal use?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You'd need to double check but as far as I can remember the min plot size is 0.5ha with a min of 20 meters width from tree to tree, so give another few meters either side for fencing. That's for hardwoods, I think min plot size for evergreens is much bigger. So yeah, as long as the soil isn't too boggy or totally covered in stone then you should have no problem.

Teagasc dont issue the grants, that would be the Forest Service within the Dept of Agriculture. Teagasc might help with the application just, but for a fee of course.

The minimum area for broadleaf is 0.1ha and 1ha for conifer. The minimum width is 20m in some catagories and up 40m for forestry for fibre . If you go with the schemes, you'll be locked in forever. With a bit of time and energy you can plant it up yourself over a couple of years. Bareroots are cheap and easily planted. Don't be tempted to put in large trees. You'll get a far better result in five years time with small (<2ft) tree. Get bareroots in over the winter.

There is no fee for Teagasc forestry advice. Check the Teagasc Forestry website for contact details of your local Teagasc Forestry Advisor.

Are you near the sea or in the uplands? If the whole area is "very open and quite bleak" as you describe the reason for that could be because persistent winds in winter and salt content in the air kills young trees. Or the soil could be stony, peaty or otherwise poor for tree growing. When planting any trees you might need some advice as to what trees or bushes would be hardy enough or otherwise suitable for the environment that you are in.
