    Hi,

Just wondering if anybody has any idea what the following issue could be. I’ve a diesel polo with a whirring noise coming from the rear of the car, around the right rear wheel. I can hear it inside the car too but it’s not very loud, only when the radio is off. It’s there in idle and while driving. I don’t notice it at higher speeds but I think that might be because the noise of the engine.

I’ll get it checked on Monday, but I’m the meantime I’m just wondering if any of has any idea what the cause could be.

Just to say I’ve heard the noise on many occasions over the years but now it seems constant.

No familiar with polos but it likely has an in tank fuel pump.
These can get noisey with age.

Thanks for that. I did come across the fuel pump when I was looking into it. The car isn’t 5 years old yet, would that be old enough to cause it do you think?

If you haven't already done so check the wheel nuts.
It could be worn brake pads/caliper/bearing.
    Not likely big problem...

My reading of the op suggests the noise is there when parked with engine running.

Yes, this is correct. It could be my imagination but I think it might get slight worse accelerating turning right, if that makes any difference.

Yeah that could be it alright. Had a listen again while ago and now I’m concerned the noise is coming from the exhaust. The car is driving as normal though and there’s no smoke or anything from the exhaust.

I expect it's something loose and rattling, if it's there while car is not moving.
When parked and revving the engine does it change or get worse? Is there a point through the revs when it is at its worst.
If you can get somebody else to listen with you you may be able to narrow down the location more easily.

Pull up the base of the rear seats, they'll hinge forward.
You'll see a round rubber thing.. that's the top of the fuel pump.

If the put your ear to it.

    Is that the noise?

I’ll try these suggestions tomorrow, thanks. It definitely gets more high pitched when I accelerate hard in a lower gear. As I said, it could happen at higher speeds too but my engine is quite loud and I think that drowns the sound out at higher speeds. You can hear the sound in the car itself buts definitely louder from the outside when you stand at the rear. It’s a very noisy car in general, and I’ve definitely heard the sound before because it’s been pointed out to me but I never took any notice because it’s always come and gone. It’s just it’s never been constant before.

Probably wheel bearing. Bring it to a local garage.

    When the car is stationary?

    When the car is stationary?

I'd be suspicious if that was the case..

Yep the noise happens when the engine is on but the car is stationary. It does seem to get worse though when accelerating at low speed. To be honest I wouldn’t notice it all when the radio is on so it’s not very loud. I’m very conscious of any noise though because I’ve had a few problems with the car ever since I bought it, and I bought it new.

I'd be thinking along the lines of the fuel pump

I’m nearly afraid to ask if anybody has a rough estimate of a fuel pump replacement...

Just get someone to sit in the car and give it a few revs while you go round the back and try and identify where the noise is coming from.

Just bring it to a garage to have a look at. they can quote you.

Have you checked could the noise be from a speaker (interference from engine)
