Setting up a second router in house

    Hi

Hoping for advice/help. I currently have Eir Broadband in my house. The router is upstairs and I find the signal isn't as strong downstairs as it should be. I have a second phone socket downstairs which I can plug a second router into, and I'm hoping this would improve my range. It just so happens that I have the option of using a spare Vodafone router, as my in-laws recently upgraded to Siro and don't need the router anymore.

So I have a couple of questions:

    1. Can I use the second router to extend the signal
    2. How difficult is it to setup the second router? Is there any way to flash the eir config directly into the spare router?

    Thanks

Are you talking about an actual "router" or a modem/router? I suspect it is the later and if so then no you can't use two of them in the same house.

I also doubt very much you could flash the Eir configuration on to the Vodafone model.

You could however most likely put the Vodafone box into bridge mode and use it as a wifi extender in which the Eir is connected to it via a run of network cable. That link may not apply completely to your model but would give you the idea of what is involved. Here's another article talking about putting the Eir F2000 into bridge mode.

But the easiest solution is to buy a pair of homeplugs. Connect one to your Eir "router"... i.e: the modem router box that a phone line goes in to. And the other homeplug can go anywhere else in the house that has poor Wifi signal. The internet goes through your home electrical wiring and comes out the other end as wifi.. boom.
