CV Advice and Recruitment Agencies

Hi there, I have just left my postgraduate course as I felt it was not the right career path for me. I am hoping to transition to a career in the financial services sector but have had no luck applying for roles so far (along with customer service/support roles) and have started to find it demoralising. I have very little experience applying for graduate jobs and dealing with recruitment agencies so this is all new to me..

Are there any good CV clinics in the Tipperary/Limerick/Clare area that anyone could recommend? I'm pretty broke atm so I'm very wary of paying for a service that might not be as good as advertised. I'm then hoping to send my CV to recruitment agencies in the hope that something will come up but it's pretty grim out there at the moment :(

Why not ask a recruiter for advice? They look at CVs all day and know what works.

You should return to your postgrad course. It'll help you get a job.

Thanks very much for the response. I think that's what I'll do first thing on Monday. I have a few recruitment agencies in mind so hopefully there will be one or two that'll be helpful. It's a tricky one because there are actually a few jobs I'm tempted to apply to this weekend but I don't know whether my CV/cover letter is ruling me out or if it's a case of more experienced applicants/not enough experience. It's such a murky area and while I'd always back myself in an interview, it's getting to that point is proving challenging at the moment.

I'm definitely open to starting a new postgraduate course by the way, but the one I had chosen was in a completely different field and was making me miserable. I would be interested in doing a part-time masters in particular but it seems I'll have to wait until next September at this stage.

Where i work at least, hiring is down. Some staff were furloughed then redeployed temporarily.. Id imagine other places are the same and that there's a lot of competition for advertised jobs.

I'd say dropping out of your course would look bad to an employer so consider whether it needs to be on your cv. Saying you're interested in returning to college could look worse.

Get an agency to look over your cv and if they don't rubbish it, use it to apply for every job you see because you can't afford to be fussy.

Might be some tips here. https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=114128637

    My CV has

    Name, phone, email
Snappy summary about me - tailored each time
Key achievements - 3 or 4 bullet points, but with enough detail to illustrate what I've done
Career history - current role is the most detailed, trying to hit on competencies asked for in job application booklets with examples of what I've done
Older roles - career history - one liners
Voluntary roles - I've a lot of experience here
    Education/qualifications - degrees, a few certificates
Personal - Full, clean driving licence
    Interests - two hobbies

Your trying to find a job in an industry that has become a commodity industry... it's going take a lot of good luck or a lot more effort than a well written CV to land a decent job in this industry.

You are going to need to cold call, network etc....
