    Hi,
Person gets a job offer (internal move or new company) salary & benefits stated. Tries to negotiate for higher, gets an extremely small higher than original offer.

Has anyone said 'thanks but no thanks'; if so have they come back with a better offer or not?

    Thanks,
    Pa.

Every company is different, but I have seen some sort of sign on bonus that comes some way to cover the difference - or perhaps a guarantee that your expected year 1 bonus will be paid in full. Both of these while still salary, might allow the hiring company to have some flexibility internally and they sort of reset after that - so your back to the original salary.

Of course many firms have much more strict control of hiring now and also money is tighter, so budgets might very well be set in stone.

I would never apply let alone go to an interview without establishing the salary range. Use an agency, you can talk salary to them whereas talking salary directly to a company has some sort of unwritten rule that will automatically end your prospects. Its b.s really especially nowadays where every company wants to be hip with the kids like Google and have 4 or 5 interview stages. Imagine doing all that to only then be told the salary is rubbish.

There are many factors to this.

    Do they have the budget.

    Do they really want you.

Is the department manager able to convince their boss to pay what you're asking.

    Do they have negotiation skills.

    And so on.

I have had people request silly money but because I was desperate I gave them what they want. And other times I wasn't desperate so that was the end of it.

I also think you need to know your worth. And know the market rates. If you are requesting silly money and you do not deserve that much, you should expect to not get the offer you want.

But it's hard to give specific advice for your situation without knowing the details.
