Recommend me a car in €5k range

    Hi folks.

My old car has died a death and I'm looking to replace it. I only have a budget of €5k and was hoping to get something 2008 or later, with fewer than 100,000 km. I would prefer to keep motor tax on the lower end of the spectrum also. Would be used for nipping around the city mostly, but also for weekend trips around Ireland.

Is this realistic? And what would yea recommend? My last car (a polo) was my first. So something a step or two up from that would be good!

Hyundai i30 or i40. Loads in your price range. Great cars.

Cheers, I hadn't considered that. How do they compare to a golf?

Most cars of this age seem to have 150-200k km on the clock. Am I right to disregard these?

You have to realistic, your looking at 8 to 10 year old cars so most are going to have that sort of mileage on them. You have genuinely low mileage cars out there but these are the exception rather than the rule. Cars don't suddenly explode when they reach a certain figure on the clock. How the car was cared for over it's life is more important rather than low mileage. Golfs sell for silly money at times so your 5k would go alot further on something other than a Golf, plus Golf petrol engines in that price range are far from bomb proof. Something Japanese or Korean would be more reliable.

Can't see any i40s in my range, but a couple of i30s.

Is a 2009 i30 with about 50k km on the clock for €4,500 decent value? Doesn't have an NCT though...

4500 is mad money for an 11 year old i30.

Can you point me to a better deal? When I put in 2008-2012 i30 with max budget of €5,000 I don't get many results!

Thanks! Tax is fairly high though.

Heres a 2010 i30 Deluxe with nice spec (leather, AC, climate / cruise control, all electric, nice wheels) for €5450. Might get that down a bit with cash, only 135,000 KM (so 13.5K a year) and 1 previous owner. If the service history checks out, this could be a nice buy.

just one example, no idea how them diesel engines keep up nor gerboxes as seems only 2 issues that might go wrong on em.

that said its hard choice with slim budget as 5k, as you can get smth ok looking but then again if opting for smaller engine, mileage leaves little choice.

as realisticly if you drop 5k, at best you want to get out 5 years of it before its worth 500.

That’s the PSA 1.6 engine, they’re nowhere near as much of a safe bet as the Hyundai IMHO.

Does the OP even need a diesel car? Sounds like a petrol car will do them.

Cheers - I'll take a look at it. Why is the Mazda above €1500 cheaper than the Hyundai despite being a year newer?

thats a good question, i do know that their newer diesels are somewhat horrible if not doing mileage, yet anything above 2013 costs like more upscale models even thou spec wise mazda is comparably pi$$ poor.

as their petrols have become really rare after 2014

the previous posts with corsa seems nice, but doubt OP is looking for some GTs or sports models.plenty powerful bargains at sub 5k if one can afford tax insurance.

way i see i always go with korean jap cars, civics, honda, toyota, nissan's, petrols.

as their engines are 90% of time bulletproof, and any issues wont develop bill that costs another car to maintain if ever, as main sacrifice is comfort, but unlike audis BMWs one at least wont need to spend half cars cost every time it breaks.
as newer bought new but always 10 years older cars, and with likes of mazda or civics toyota id scrap em after 3-5 years due to rust becoming major issue where car itself could prob would last another 5-10 years easily otherwise.

You're dead right. I appreciate all the suggestions but not a fan of the sporty/boy racery type models. I do appreciate a decent spec inside the car though, which is why the Hyundi above appeals.

Thanks again to everyone who has chipped in, I've read everything and still hunting.

This seems like a very good does it not? I haven't come across many 2012 models in my range, and it seems reasonably specced. He appears to have been trying to sell it since February though. A red flag?

It's possibly sold already and the seller didn't bother to take the advert down. It's a UK import so make sure to do proper history checks on it.

150k km is only about 90k miles. That's nothing on a diesel one of these.

The Hyundi and Rio recommended in this thread were already gone when I tried to view them. Feck sake.

+1 on the Kia Rio, we've owned one on hire purchase and it was great

Another Rio, a bit more expensive but from a dealer with some sort of warranty:

This Hyundai i20 is worth looking at too, it's mechanically identical to the Rio:
    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/hyundai-i20-1-2-active-nct-07-22/25431239

They are both UK imports so make sure to do your own history check before parting with any cash.

Cheers - €6k is too rich for my blood unfortunately but I'd love to nab a decent Rio, having read a few revies now.

I'm sure there is room in those asking prices to negotiate a bit off. Surely paying €5500 for a 2012 car is better value than paying just under 5k for a 2010?

Basically a fixed 307. Not a bad car but most of them in Ireland are shockingly low spec. It would need to have an immaculate service history.
