8GB of ram is plenty. Plenty gaming rigs still on 8GB of RAM. You'll be more than comfortable without 16GB

Im using a toshiba for the last 5 years and it is great. It's an Intel Core i5 4210U @ 1.70GHz and has done 3 college degrees.

Looking for something futureproof as much as possible with an SSD for a teen going into the leaving cert year and probable college beyond that.

I have access to the dell student discount and the studentbeans lenovo education store.

you don't need any more than 8gb ram unless you're doing regular video editing or big data processing on large volumes

    it's a great laptop tbh

Thanks for the suggestions. I am adverse to using parcel motel due to problems returning if faulty. I went to DID today and got this for 630 euro

    Happy with that

wouldn't pick that myself over a £450 magicbook 14 but good luck with it.

That honor laptop has the old ryzen CPU it's 43% slower than the newer ryzen CPU honor has a new computer due out.we will see if they put the new amd.watch out for ryzen it has memory problems.look for 4000 and above for.ryzen laptops not.3500 all sellers jn Ireland are selling it's old Intel and amd computers. Look to German companies the have the newer CPU from amd and Intel watch out for the cheaper 500 800 Euro computers they have bad screens 250 nits all brands

Ok CPU but I think it's the older AMD Ryzen 7 3700U but not sure about 43%
Slower than newer ryzen CPUs you need.to go to Germany for newer CPUs online

The honor has the older ryzen CPU it's 43% slower honor is only selling it's new ones in china through JD for com it looks like
The 2 new ryzen CPUs Neither supports Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT),

It depends what cpu you buy.

There are several new ryzen mobile cpus

    Eg. 4300u, 4500u, 4600u, 4700u, 4800u

the 4300u is barely more powerful at all than the 3500u

It's a law of diminishing returns. For many day-to-day tasks there's no noticeable difference as the 3500U is fine

It's not a slow CPU to start with

for certain tasks like video editing there would be a big difference depending on the CPU

But again for many tasks you would not notice a difference between the laptops

If you buy a laptop in Germany you get a German keyboard layout

re the 3700u vs 3500u - there is almost no difference in performance on respected benchmarks like geekbench

    https://browser.geekbench.com/processors/amd-ryzen-5-3500u

    https://browser.geekbench.com/processors/amd-ryzen-7-3700u

the vivobook is also plastic build whereas the magicbook is of a much superior aluminium chassis build quality

and you can get it for €500 right now vs 700 for the plastic vivobook.
