Vat on a nearly new car from uk / northern ireland

    Hypothetical scenario

I buy a car in the UK that's over 6 months old but has 5,800km on the clocks. As it stands I can pay 0 VAT in the uk if I complete form VAT411.

By the time I get to Ireland and bring the car to the VRT centre, the car has over 6000km on the clocks. According to the letter of the law, vat is no longer payable in ireland when registering the car.

Would revenue still charge VAT anyway?
Has anyone been in this situation? (recently - there are some old boards posts on this but they're years old)

    Thanks

I know someone who bought a car VAT free, went past the mileage and ended up paying no VAT here. That’s about 6 years ago.

It isn’t supposed to work like that though.

When filling out the Vat411 you make a declaration that you will pay vat in destination country but not sure what penalty the Brits can throw at you. Will NCTS register the car if you haven’t paid vat?
