Best places in Ireland for autumn break

My spouse and I had a wonderful staycation in the west a few weeks back, and it's made us itch to get on the Irish roads again. We want to go away for a long weekend in early October, so the weather will obviously be colder than it currently is.

My OH loves mountains and the outdoors, and I love history, interesting museums, scenery, and lots of reading. What areas/cities would be good? We've already done the west, so would be looking for other recommendations.

    Thanks!
