Return to studying accounts

Hi, I'm looking for some advice about studying accounting part time. I did exams A - D of the accounting technician course but it was almost 20 years ago. I'm hoping to return to work after staying at home full time for a few years and I'm considering going back to study accounting.

I didn't pursue it years ago after the first batch of exams as I went travelling, then went on to work in different areas but often with accounts admin types of jobs. Despite my good experience I'm not getting any interviews at all right now so thought I would have a better chance if I started studying myself part time and keep an eye on jobs at the same time.

Anyone else pursue accounting after a very, very long gap? and if so where did you start again? I was looking at DBS or Griffith College courses but I'm not sure if I'd have to start from scratch again. Any advice appreciated, many thanks.

I can't say right now is a great time to look for jobs, but accounts technicians were in huge demand in Dublin until Covid.

In my view you benefit far more from doing the exams when you're working in an accounts environment.
I doubt you'll have exemptions from professional exams and I doubt your accounts technician exams are still recognised (I may be wrong - check with them)

One idea for you.. immediately register for ACCA and apply for 2 exams. And register with a recruitment agency. Tell them you are studying accounting and want to reenter the workforce in an accounts admin role to gain up-to-date experience. Pass those 2 exams and do a few days temping, you'll be able to call yourself a part-qualified accountant with x years accounts admin experience.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. I'm going to look at the ACCA website tonight. I think I'll have to contact them directly to check about the exams I did years ago.
