Travelling expenses

Maybe someone can answer this one.

A person does various bits and pieces of work, travelling around the country. In some cases is paid through the payroll (PAYE deducted etc). In other cases, he issues an invoice etc and gets paid on foot of that (Sch D Case I)

He does not get paid travelling expenses, so will be claiming a proportion of his car costs as an expense against his Sch D Case I.

Question: Can he claim the travelling for the PAYE deducted work on the civil service mileage basis, or does he have to claim all of it as if it were Sch D case I?
