New Job was Misleading

    Hi guys,

I've just returned from travel and started a new job. I don't mean to sound ungrateful as I know i'm lucky to have a job. The issue is we are on week 2 of training and due to start working next week. I haven't received my contract yet.

We are doing group training online and were given our shifts/schedule today. When I asked hours initially before agreeing to take the job I was told "Sunday to Thursday"

I thought this was fine, 5 day week with my weekend off. It now seems that this is not the case but that it is 7 days on for everyone with 2 days off. We get a weekend once a month.

I'm really annoyed over this as i'm planning to do a part time evening course and doing 7 days on with 2/3 days course work in between is too much. Also this was never mentioned in any of my emails with HR.

We're due to get paid this week for the two weeks so far as it's monthly pay but I feel like quitting.

If it's not for you, and you're not financially reliant on the job, then leave.

Have you a manager you can query the schedule difference with?

I appreciate it would be difficult but I would be inclined to say stick with it but actively look for something else.

I am thinking of emailing HR directly. Just want to know if id be in trouble now if I quit immediately.

Pretty sure I have an email from HR questioning my hours which gives no indication of working 7 days on.

Seen another thread questioning working for this company and how they have a bad rep but won't burn any bridges for now

No you wouldn't be in any trouble, the only issue is if you put it on your CV you're going to have to explain why you left so quickly. It might show a degree of inflexibility but if you're not willing to work most weekends it's probably best for both parties that this is discussed at the interview stage.

    Frankly I don't blame you.

I wouldn't have minded doing weekends with one/two off here and there. It's the sheer lies about the roster and the expectation to work 7 days on.

Yeah, but this can be spun too. That sounds bad but what I mean is that it can also be described as a plus:

"Yes, I was offered that job however I had enrolled (or was planning to) in further training. Unfortunately the hours/shift pattern required would have clashed with my training so I decided to continue with my education. I am a firm believer that regular training/updating/education can only improve my value to a company" Yadda yadda yadda.

Get out of there as soon as you can. I once applied for and accepted a job with company car, road based etc. Two weeks later the HR directors brother was given a job in my team, my job and the company car that was part of the deal. I was told I was needed in the office. He had 0 IT experience, it was pure nepotism. I still had the job spec from the job advert, but no point arguing. I stayed till I got a new job in a far better company for better pay too.

Is 7 days in a row (with 2 off) legal? I thought 6 was the absolute maximum.

As you say, though, the company seems to have a bed rep. If you can afford to, I'd leave - you wouldn't even have to put it on your CV (although the other poster's advice about turning into a positive is very good).

It's possible they didn't lie to you, but they have since changed the working hours.

Only you know what you should do.

Certainly I think have a chat with HR to see if you can get your hours changed and take it from there. Perhaps you go part-time and only work 4 days a week, leaving the weekends free.

Don't make an emotional decision. Jobs are hard to come by right now.

Judging by the conversation and the message I seen from the supervisor, this is an ongoing and no change to hours. If I go part time which I doubt is an option it will be peanuts i'll be paid. I have a couple of interviews lined up so i'll see how I go
