Ok, so took out motor insurance with them

Price was €664, so I decided to go with it

Paid €177 deposit then was going to do the rest in installments

Then the fun began, trying to deal with them via chat constantly, emails flying in about documents, can't take to them by phone etc.

After submitted documents I would get an email saying to send more documents

Then at one stage they said there was a claim settled against me (never) and for me to send a letter and sign it stating why I didn't disclose this. I was away on holidays so I didn't see this, then get another email saying they are notifying the insurance ombudsman and Gardaí or something

Anyway, I give up, decided to cancel and go elsewhere

I sent them a cancellation letter by post on the 23rd July

They didn't reply to me until 31st July, telling me I was missing my certificate

I had to contact them again to tell them that I never got my certificate

They then cancelled my insurance straight away (on Friday evening when I had to drive home from work from Dublin) - oh, and it was a bank holiday weekend

I had to get onto chat again and ask them to cancel on Wednesday to give me time to find insurance with another provider

So finally cancelled, and policy now with someone else, HASSLE FREE

I went looking for a refund (I paid €177 deposit) and the rest would be by DD

But I have been told that I used 30% of my policy in the month (or just over) that I was insured and that I actually owe them money, but they let that slide

At some point this was agreed by me (in the mass of documents that I generally don't read fully) that if I cancel after the 14 day cooling off period then I cannot get the refund as I used 30% of the policy

    Very frustrating.

Given that I agreed to those terms, I don't think I have any come back at all here?

I think the issues you encountered are down to the haphazard way you dealt with the paperwork. I don't get your point that you sent them a cancellation letter on 23rd July and you're annoyed they cancelled it straight away when you spoke to them on 31st.

There would be a minimum charge for cancelling a policy in the 1st year and this will be clear in the policy document
