Loud clunking noise in the car

    Hi guys!

I have an 2005 Opel Astra 1.4l Hatchback.

For the last couple days the car has been making some loud weird clunking noise when I turn my wheel either way and I drive it at a slow speed, usually when moving the car off. I'm trying to figure out if the issue is either a ball joint or something else. I'm going to bring the car to mechanic tomorrow to take a look, but I just wanted to know what you guys think it is and how much would a repair with me mechanic be roughly?

    Many thanks

Firstly check wheel nuts are tight if you had a puncture, could be lower A frames bushes gone as you can check that yourself by grabbing road wheel with left hand and right hand and rotate to front and back, normally when bush is gone you get about 1 1/2 inches of movement.
Other issues could be drop links, steering inner arms/ and or track rod ends worn,no idea on price sorry.

Not sure if your car has a centre engine stay which can clunk when moving off.Gear lever movement is noticed when in a gear and stay is worn.

    CV joints?
On the driveshafts - between the gearbox and front wheels.
They each have a rubber boot to protect the joint. If the boot is damaged dirt will soon damage the joint.

We had a corsa in with very bad knocking and found out it was the movement of driveshaft moving in and out of cv joint with 20,000km on car and told customer to chase opel about a faulty worn/badly made unit on the drivers side but noise would only happen with car in motion and suspension moving up and down.

Sounds like top mounts, not too dear to fix.
