In your opinion, for a budget of 40K which new car has the best ride quality? Needs to be automatic.

By ride quality I am going to assume you mean a soft floaty suspension rather than a good handling car. I always found Citroen to be excellent in this regard. Something like the new Aircross would "float my boat" in this regard. Avoid getting bigger wheels on anything as this will increase harshness, although you may not notice too much. I'd say the aircross would beat anything in the sub 40k bracket.
After that youre into the 55-60k bracket of the likes of A6, E Class and 5 series with adaptive suspension for serious comfort

Thank you, Heres Johnny! Yes, I am looking for a soft suspension. Would you know by any chance how the Aircross would compare with the new Leon/Golf equipped with the Dynamic Chassis Control? Would it be significantly softer?

Aircross is made from ground up to be softer and more comfy, with extra noise isolation. I haven't driven new Leon yet, and no interest in new golf as it looks like something out of the bottom of the bin, but I would still think Aircross would be better for comfort.
If you do go Aircross, I would suggest going with 180hp petrol engine and auto. I found, after test drive, small petrol engine is just loud and guttles. Kind of defeats the while comfort part. Citroen is doing 5 years warranty and 0% Apr pcp too. You can get highest spec, 180hp auto for less then 40k.

I'd imagine it would be yeah. Take a spin in both anyway and see how you feel. It was always Citroens USP to be honest. You'll lose your bollox on a 40k aircross more than a golf or Leon but if it's comfort you're looking for it's a decent starting point. I sat in one in a showroom once and was impressed, but never drove one.

Citroen residuals have been holding up of late. The cars are better more desirable and mainstream but if course would not be as good as a Golfs

Citron are good. Skoda superb is highly rated.

But most cars are in the luxury class. A6 was great when drove it. You could get a nice 2nd hand model.

I have an A6 myself and I like it but mine is S Line and defo not what the OP is after. Maybe an SE would be better. The ones with adaptive and air suspension are the current models and would be 60k+ which is out of budget, OP said he wants a new car. Personally I would always go used to get what I want within budget but each to their own.

    Hybrid Camry would suit

Not a lot of car for what you buy( luxurious wise) got middling reviews

Skoda Superb rides very well, just avoid the larger rims.

Mine is a 2016 and has adaptive suspension and even with 20" wheels it's really smooth on country roads but they are hard to find second hand.

Oh never seen the new Car bit..

Its a lovely looking car from outside, but inside it looks like something from 90s...

If I replace mine with a new one I'll look for adaptive.

    They’re alright I think they’re a bit dated/bland. But certainly a reliable competent car

Camry isn’t too bad in terms of value, much cheaper than a low spec 3 series and that bit better equipped and more 5 series class in size.
I notice they’re popular with gentlemen 50s/60s age range

Just on topic, I put my baby cupra for service and got 202 New Leon 1.5 etsi dsg until its finished.

Its a very nice car and very damn nippy for 150hp, was very impressed. Really modern inside, screens are big and have lots of things to adjust to make it perfect for anyone. Feels sporty too. Overall, I really liked it.
But OP, if you looking for comfort, then its definitely not a car for you. In sport and comfort modes, I did not felt any difference. Its harsh ride and not far off my baby cupra in comfort mode.
If comfort you looking for then Aircross is definitely better option.

I have a little bit obsession regarding comfort in cars after driving fords without any noise insulation for a while

I owned 2016 citroen grand picasso with 17"alloys for 2 years and it was great NVH(Noise/vibration/harshness) wise. To compare, I have driven a 2011 f10 on my daily commute couple of days when it was being fixed and I couldn't believe the amount of noise coming into cabin comparing to grand picasso.

I didn't drive aircross yet but but drove its sibling peugeot 3008 with a petrol engine. It was slightly better than grand picasso so I believe aircross or 3008 both would make you happy.

Thank you, ShadowHearth. Do you know if it is possible to fit smaller rims and replace the original low profile tyres with something more comfortable?

I drove an FR and felt that its DCC in the custom mode is quite nice, the main issue for me was vibration on some surfaces. So may be smaller rims would help?

Love the new FR, I think it is the best car on the market at the moment. Read a lot of controversial feedback about the Aircross though, need to book a test drive.

So far in configurator you get only one option of wheels. Not sure what size they are, but they are big, and yes, that vibration is noticeable a lot. Maybe its just me, but i expected it to be a lot softer. The 182 old model FR 184hp estate I got from them before was way nicer to drive.

Outside of that, I liked it, its very impressive car with lots of space. It looks a specially nice in white. They had one in show room.

Definitely book a test drive, but heads up on the engine in test car. I bet it will be 1.5 diesel or 1.2 petrol. I really did not liked 1.2. You had to floor it to get any movement out of it, and in return it would roar a lot. And not nice roar.

Test drive 3008 with 18" alloys as well. I think it has better quality interior than aircross. Small steering wheel is quite nice if you like sharper responses from the car.

Sorry, I was not clear. I meant if I buy a car with large wheels, can I then go to a garage, fit smaller rims and sell the original rims as second hand? I need automatic and they tend to come in higher specs only, which tend to have larger wheels.

If you fully paying it off, without dealers finance, you can do whatever you want to it, even paint it with paintbrush in pink colour, if you want to. :)

Would a 3 - 4 years Merc be reliable? I would imagine it would be quite comfortable to drive?

What about the latest Toyota Corolla - read some reviews, looks like its suspension is really smooth?

    Don't it's terrible

Had one as a loaner while car was being serviced
I was shocked at how bad a place it was to be

I've an fr and I drove the new one.
Cannot see it coming in as floaty or smooth.

    We've a Honda CR-V.
40k would get you a new hybrid one I think.
Nice and composed with no harshness.

Don't bother with Kuga or Ateca.
    40k won't get you a 5 series of a6 etc.

My first thoughts would be long wheel base, saloon -hatch or estate always noiser,. Easier damp a saloon than a crossover. French.

So I've never driven one but the 508 is got to be worth a drive.

Probably Mercedes for that "on rails" feeling.
    E-class has been mentioned already.

OP, look at the Toyota Camry. They are hybrid and would be more built for comfortable than a Corolla while offering the same level of reliability. 40k might get you into a new one or at the very least a 2020 pre reg or ex demo model:

The lexus gs300hybrid latest is the upmarket Camry and would be better again, very few about though.

I have Camry Platimum, and ride quality is excellent. Though it may be even smoother in Hybrid and Hybrid Sol specs as wheels are 17 inch, as opposed to 18 inch on Platinum.
