    Hi,

I am looking for some advice, I am trying to find if there is a car hire company that does one way car hire from the north to Scotland (specifically Edinburgh )

Ii have looked at the big boys Hertz, Avis eurorcar .. and they don't seem to want to quote/ or the price is ludicrous (circa 500/600gbp for 3 days )

Ii was looking to get a medium sized car, focus estate that would accommodate 4 adults and luggage travailing mid September , any help appreciated.

The reason most companies don't want to do it is the logistics of getting their car back to their home base. This is why 1 way hires are so expensive. They have to lose the car for a period of time and can't hire it out, pay somebody to bring it back or hope for another 1 way hire back in their direction.

There are websites where the rental companies will let people rent their cars for free or close to free in order to bring 1 way rentals back to their home location, with stipulations on maximum km's driven, time allowed etc...
You just have to be lucky to find one that matches where you want to go to from where you are.

just look up rental relocations in the uk like this one

It could be cheaper to fly to Scotland and hire a car there then get the ferry back to NI.

i am asking on behalf of a friend who is moving to Edinburgh for 12 months. and it works out cheaper to do a self drive car one way so he can transport all his clothes kitchen ware etc , also he dosent want to fly due to covid

Are you moving stuff from the North to Scotland? No car hire company would rent to an ROI resident if they were going there as the Revenue could seize the car.

You'd be very lucky to get a relocation rental from NI to Edinburgh, as you have seen the standard rental cost is very high so not many cars will be needed to be returned.

Remember you will have to pay for the ferry crossing as well.

    Utter garbage.

This is not utter garbage, ROI residents cannot drive a car registered outside the State inside the State. Of course in this case the person is emigrating and a case could be made but a rental company is unlikely to want to deal with that much detail.

Try Enterprise. I knew they allowed one way GB/NI rentals as I used it a few years ago. Looks like a 3 day rental of a Ford Kuga would be around £200 with drop off in Edinburgh.

Have you looked at a map lately? Here's one just in case...

Thank you for the bleedin' obvious, you obviously have time on your hands.

Because the OP wished to rent a car in the North did not mean that the person moving necessarily lived there, which is why I asked if that was the case. There would be little point in trying to get a one way from the ROI to Scotland.

    just to clarify

    1. The person hiring the car has a Irish passport and has a Irish driving license.

    2. They wish to hire car for a one way trip from NI to Scotland.

    3. I will be driving them to collect the hire car in NI in my car with all there kit. We will then transfer all there kit to the hire car and i will wave goodbye.

4 They will drive to there rented part furnished accommodation in Scotland and unload the car, and then return the car to the hire company in Scotland.

    5. In 12 months time they will do the reverse.

    Back to the original question

" I am trying to find if there is a car hire company that does one way car hire from the north to Scotland "

I should of added at a reasonable rate.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, i think i have found a focus estate for 200gbp

It doesn’t matter where they live. You’re aware there are direct ferries from NI to Scotland, so what would Revenue have to do with anything?

Probably cheaper to buy a crappy old van, transfer insurance on to it, and drive it over!

    I'm sure there's a good reason.....
'..3. I will be driving them to collect the hire car in NI in my car with all there kit. We will then transfer all there kit to the hire car and i will wave goodbye..'
but if your car is fully loaded with their stuff, why not just drop it off in Edinburgh yourself?

    1. because i dont fancy spending 14 days in quarantine on return

    2.return ferry ticket is 145e

    3. the cost of the car is 200 gbp

    4. 14 days of work ....loads of € :D

Why not courier all his stuff to the new Scottish address? It can't be much more than a pallet full, if he's gonna get it into a rental car.

Take boat as foot passenger from Larne to Stranraer. (Or Dublin to HH, if handier). Get rental car in Stranraer and to Scottish city where he drops car back to hire company. Or take a bus/train and save a few pound that way.

A pallet from Dublin to Glasgow would cost around £160 and take 2 days.

I assumed that returning from NI needed quarantine,so it would make no difference.
    I suppose I'm wrong!

Yes there is no requirement to quarantine when returning from NI, which a significant minority are using to travel to other countries and avoid our non enforced quarantine.

The plan makes no sense tbh, would be far cheaper and easier to get it shipped over via pallet like op suggested.

i have never shipped anything by pallet , and know very little about it, might be worth looking into the options and have a look at the cost. Thanks
