A thread for ambitious and not so ambitious projects that are unlikely to ever see the light of day.

Some of them have made it to various stages of feasibility and planning, but seem to be eternally so. Others are complete flights of fancy.

I'll start off with a naming a few:
Dublin Airport to city or the Belfast line.
New build heavy rail anywhere outside of Dublin and its hinterland.
Luas type projects outside of Dublin.

A stop at Blarney. They have been thinking and talking about it with the last 30 years.

Irish rail ever buying a locomotive ever again.

A direct Waterford to Limerick service without a change in Limerick Junction and a 45 minute wait in the howling wind and rain.
Dare I say that the service would continue on to Galway or even Athenry?

    Why stop there.

Alternating from Wexford/Rosslare, they could service Waterford/Limerick/Galway/Sligo/Wesport/Ballina

Well if we're going mitty style , (but not bat****e crazy ) then yup youre stop at blarney , maybe even a detour line closer to blarney , but surely there are several other stops including blackpool ,that could be included north of cork city , and housing provided to suit .. but for as much as possible make sure any commuter service and new stations don't get in the way of the Intercity service ...
    I'd love a higher speed,higher frequency cork/ Dublin /Dublin airport and beyond service , maybe pendolinos ,

Limerick city has quite a few disused and under underused lines , it would be great to see those used for a light rail project ,if the journeys would be there to support it ...

Cork light rail (or brt ) .
    delivered before 2060

A Rail link to Donegal would be nice.. a part of the country constantly overlooked.

Letterkenny - Dublin high speed line opening up the likes of Tyrone, Cavan, Monaghan economically. Mind you Dublin will likely have 10 underground lines before this even happens.

There is a feasibility study currently being undertaken regarding a Letterkenny to Derry connection. This would be amazing if it happened!

Greenways (so we can pretend we care for the environment) and mosherways so we can drive to use the greenways.

    Thats what the people want.

I think that the open railways should be used as preferred routes for motorways to the greenways.
