According to Citizens information, these are the conditions for getting "student credits" in order to increase your number of PRSI contributions and so qualify for Jobseekers Benefit-
"To qualify you must have worked and paid PRSI Class A before starting your course. You must have started your course before you reached 23 years of age and before you have taken up full-time insurable employment."
The first sentence here says you have to have worked before starting course.
The 2nd sentence says you have to do the course before taking up full time work.

So the two sentences contradict each other. Can anyone make sense of this?

    They don’t contradict each other

The first line states you must have worked and paid PRSI at class A

The second states you must not have started full time employment

Effectively it’s to stop people being penalised for taking up part time employment when they’re young (as the yearly average calculation for state pensions uses your first weekly contribution as the start date)
