Kia Picanto LX1.0 litre (131) I'm clueless about cars

I'm due to get my car for a service.

I've an inkling they will be tell me the brake needs to be fixed and the inkling comes from how weak the car stops when breaking so its more so obvious than an inkling and of course tyers as well. Which brings me to a silly question, would the tyers be the cause of the slow breakage?

It's a full service so I'm sure I'll be told all the added extra bits. I'm hoping there's not a lot to be service and just the little bits here and there. But sure I would rather get it all done. Better safe than sorry.

Would anyone have an idea how much fixing the breaks would cost? Or is it a case of, what the mechanic finds that could be completely different?

Also what to expect from a full service? What gets checked out? I'm curious as I've heard people say they get ripped off when a mechanic doesn't find anything and charges them for "pointless" things. What is expected?

I had a Fiat Panda before (yes I know please dont judge it was my first car for 6 years and I loved it). Stupidly I never had my last car in for a service. I changed the wheels that was about it. My Kia now, I've had it 3 years and one full service when I had it over a year and all I had to do was change battery and its passed NCT twice since then. Overall I've had no major problems with it and I love it. It's lately I have notice that the break is weak (?)

    Sorry for being clueless

    I wouldn't be too worried.

Firstly a panda is a great car so don't worry about that although you probably should have serviced it.

Secondly brakes on a picanto should be cheap enough so once again don't worry.

If it was the tyres you'd be skidding and I think you'd notice that.

Having said that the tyres could be worn. You should be able to tell if you actually look at them and see if they are smooth.

Ultimately you will have to trust the Mechanic, is it a local type, a chain, or a main dealer?

    Brakes around 100 euro
    Tyres maybe 130 for 2
    Service say 150

I suggest you need to focus on getting somebody trustworthy and then trust them. I hope this is helpful and not seen as stating the obvious.

    Hiya!

Oh the Panda was brilliant. I would definitely recommend for a starter especially learner to get the feel of the roads etc. I had it for years and never did me any harm until maybe the last year of having it and it was kindly telling me it was giving up. I was sad to see it go to be honest.

It's main dealer that my family have used for years and they glow about them so you would think I would have some form of idea of how they work but my family all drive different cars so I'm getting different quotes left right and center.

So far the dealer has the car and pretty much said to enjoy my time and they will call me when ready so my bank is ready to be broken haha!

    Thanks for your reply :-)

    The total amount....

€474. My heart dropped to my arse.

The breaks were bad as I had stated plus they needed to be aligned, badly, along with 4 new tyers. Including the actual service. I was sick when I seen the price.

But the good news is that my car is pretty much sorted for a long time.

You hadn't serviced it for 6 years so that's hardly a surprise.

You’d have been paying a lot more on a bigger car.
    That’s not that bad.

Thats what my partner said. He was telling me to expect more when the service was finished and I was like "Ah it won't be that bad" but in saying that the mechanic was great and he did say that for only buying the car 3 years previously and only servicing it once during that time, it wasn't in too much of a bad state but I got it fixed in the right time. My NCT isn't due until next year so I say I'll be grand around then.

My lesson is learned. Get your car service once a year and you won't have to fork out too much.

I know. It was my first cat, I was a lot younger and considering the car was already years older, I really should of been getting it service but sure look. I got a good 6 years run from it without any major issues so I was thankful for that.

In line with my estimate just you needed 4 tyres not 2. You did ok
