Very strange, Renault Megane oil change

I was changing the oil in the oh's car (2012, Renault Megane 1.5 dci), when it occured to me that I might have put in a bit too much oil, so I checked the oil level dip stick, and it seemed to be a couple of cm's over the max line.

When I went under the car to loosen the drain plug to let out some oil, hardly any oil came out. I am after putting in approx 4.5 litres.

I think you may have drained the gearbox and filled the engine.

Do not drive it until diagnosed.

Did you run the car? Oil would fill up filter and some may be taken into that.

Run it and then take out if needed.... Did you check on the ground or raised?

I think I probably did this alright. I started it last night and when I went to put it in reverse I got an error message to put the gear to 'P'.. its an automatic. Will ring the garage to take a look

Take a photo of where you removed the oil.

I found the oil drain sump today, it is square, the gearbox oil drain sump is hexagonal. I drained the gearbox oil accidentally. Luckily I realised my mistake last night and didnt drive it, Im looking around for the right gearbox oil at the minute, although there seems to be a very big difference in price between the Renault dealership locally, and the auto-factors over the border. €33 per litre in Renault, £6 per litre in the North... and they both did a search based on the reg of the car.

    I did this before :D

Luckily for me only a litre or so of oil came out of the gear box.
I thought it was weird but I did know the oil level was low.

Car still drove fine ,had to bring it in to get the gearbox oil filled as you need the the computer.

Thats funny, I had the gearbox oil changed 2 years ago and I was there when they did it and there was no computer used.

It was an audi A3, non DGS.
Maybe they didnt need a computer I don't know, but I couldnt find out how to do it.

I got it sorted today. It turns out I had the wrong gearbox oil in the car all along. I remember this because it had been changed 2 years ago, and I remember the auto factors recommending AFT at the time.

I rang Renault today and they did a reg based search for the correct oil, and its actually manual transmission oil that is recommended for the car, even though its an automatic. It was expensive though, €30 per litre, but the car is now driving better than ever. It had been very jumpy lately, especially in low gears / slow traffic etc. plus it would rev high sometimes from a dead stop. So it was a good job that I accidentally drained the gearbox oil yesterday.
