Would a 13k offer be successful for this?

    You could certainly try!

I negotiated a discount on the car I just bought from a dealer. Mind you, they weren't too happy about it (salesman demeanour completely changed once we started haggling) but if you don't ask, you won't receive.

Ended up getting 550 EUR off the price and two free services.

You sure it's still for sale? Motortax.ie is saying transferred to an individual on 7th August...I was checking to see how long it was traded in to see if you could bargain heavy on it. €13k would get it I'd say, might need to start at €12,750 and then up it.

I think the only one who could answer the question would be the seller. It all depends on how much they have in the car and are willing to accept.
Give it a try anyway, the worst that can happen is that they say no.

Problem is that the 13,995 is a scrappage discount.

So in their eyes they are "already" offering 3 k discount.....

Price up a few other 2016 era i40s to guage the wider i40 market.

Personally I'd go for a late Mk 4 Mondeo or an Avensis of 2014 (ish) vintage myself.

With the Avensis they changed to BMW engines around 2015 when they did the facelift....

And the Mk 5 Mondeo just doesn't seem as good as the Mk 4 for reliability (anecdotally).

These scrappage discounts are bull**** and just moving figures around. All they have done is upped the retail price to account for allowing 3k off, the net price is still the same.

When you are trying to do a deal in anything don't offer a round sum like 13k as a final all you have got offer,.. Seller unlikely to believe you.

In this case you could offer 12.5k first, you will be told no and then offer something like 12,875 or 13,125 final offer saying that's all you have and that might work.

    Absolutely.

That's kind of what I was trying to say but badly :(....

The Avensis isnt an amazing car but OP is looking at i40s and a D4D Avensis is definitely not worse.

Same situation with Mk 4 Vs Mk 5 Mondeo. Mk 5 is inferior and designed down to a cost with too much negative American thinking.

Mondeo Mk 4 is a nicer car, the Avensis in D4D is probably a more reliable.

A well minded Mark 4 Mondeo or D4D Avensis should serve OP well.

And both work best in Estate form - in the Mondeo's case you could live in the boot.

The Avensis just looks nicer as an Estate imo.

Seems strange that you'd be the 3rd owner in 4 years
