Birds digging up lawn

Is there any defence to blackbirds/thrushes digging up my lawn!?

They had wrecked it last week and since I put down more soil in the damaged areas they are at it again this morning.
It's much softer and damper near the walls which is their main target.

Put some chicken wire around the area.

Almost certain they are digging up leatherjackets, be grateful, and replace the divots!

If you prevent them from doing what they are doing your lawn will look far worse when all the grass roots are eaten by the grubs they are digging out.
Leave them alone and let them do what they are doing, once they have finished maintaining your lawn just tidy it up and thank them for their work.
