Public Sector Position

    Hi
    I'm looking at a public service role and noticed the pay bands.
    Are these set in stone or are they flexible to go beyond them if the candidate is worth it?

    They used to have some leeway but not any more, post 2013, the annual pay is linked to pensions, the only thing that counts is previous service at the same grade. The old pension scheme was based on the final salary and the new one is based on annual salary each year and thereby the contributions made to the scheme. So as they would be increasing pension entitlement they are not allowed is what I have been told.

    Totally non negotiable AFAIK.
    In my job years service can be carried from another semi-state/state position so you may not start on point one of the salary scale. If you are private sector though you start on point one.

    There are positions where you can start on a further point on the scale if you have significant experience. This will be called out on the information booklet, as the organisation would need DPER approval to offer this. They only really get that for jobs where they are unable to attract candidates, usually because the difference between public and private is so ridiculously high.

    A good example that's still up is the DPP looking for prosecutors.
