White car, tar stains. Tried to remove with warm soapy water but while it removed the black speck, it left a brown residue streak behind it. Would white spirit or wd40 damage white metallic paint? Or is there anything else more suitable I should use?

No do not use those products.
You can by specific tar remover on any detailing website or even Halfords.

    https://www.reflectautocare.ie/

Link there search for tar remover.
    Although beware it’s a slippery slope :-)

There is also a detailing section on here also for car upkeep.

I assume any tar remover I buy will be safe? I’m terrified of damaging it!

Petrol was the substance of choice back in the day.

I've found the Holts stuff available at any motor factors does a fairly good job. Never had any issue with paint damage.

How many times you fill your car with fuel per month?
How many times you have fuel spilled on car body/paintwork near filler cap?
How badly it is damaged by fuel so far?

Don't think its fuel damaging paintwork, its rubbing and scratching. Tar need to dissolve to come of "easy". Done it several times with no issue, but your call.
Specialized solutions might be :rolleyes::rolleyes: designed to dissolve tar quicker, leave no oily stains...

Petrol/diesel will leave oily stain - washing needed.

To be honest I don’t care how I do it or what it costs me, I just want them gone and no brown lines/marks left afterwards! I’m thinking now maybe I should just bring it for a valet and let them work their magic, surely they’ll do a better job than me!

A valet will know what to do.

I have used wd40 without problems, first wd40, then a hot wash (to remove residue) and wax.
Here is a comparison video - Simonz vs WD40 vs Tardis

FB Auto detailing came up in the google search. Seems to be a bit more than what I’m looking for.

Cif has grit-type stuff in it that will put scratches on the paint.

Not a detailer but do appreciate a clean car and find the Turtle Wax Bug/Tar Remover to be good. Better at bugs than at tar.
