We dehorned a 6 week old calf a week ago. We didn't go too deep and put on silver spray and Stockholm tar. Calf was shaking his head a lot so we put it in there. The buds had a very thin crust and we pulled back and there was white stuff like an infection. Buds wounds didn't seem to be healing too well. It's as if the body isn't healing. Also there are bald patches down along her backside. We were wondering if salmonella. We washed with Epsom salts and put penecillin on the wound and then silver spray and Stockholm tar. Just wondering what anyone else would do?

Get a vet to check the calf over if she is sick. Make sure it is eating/ drinking also. If there is a wound I would tend to use alamycin spray but vet would advise. Bald patches could be start of ringworm or something as well

If its an infection you'll need to get some strong antibiotics from the vet to get it sorted before the flies get to it. If the iron is kept on the horn too long you can cause some issues too.

Flies this time of year r a pain. If not sick washing alone might do it. But if temp at all or off food and water it’s a vet job
