Cartell.ie report

    Hi All;

In the process of buying a used car. The garage is a friend of a friend.

He told me the car had minor damage to the bumper but it was repaired, it is still the original bumper on the car.

The car is 2016 with only 20k km on clock, similar cars listed have twice the mileage and are 2-3k more expensive

I just done a cartell report and it comes back with the damage alert:
    Damage Level - Insurer Alert
Category D - Damaged repairable, the cost of repair is prohibitive or vehicle valuation post repair is questionable.

I guess this somewhat ties into what he told me, but does this sound like more than a little bump!

The car passed NCT in July this year.

Is there a cause for concern here?

Category D means that the damage was non structural, just body panel damage that is safe to repair and put back on the road. I’ve seen some Cat D (Now called Cat N) that are barely scratched and they are written off. From a safety point of view I wouldn’t be concerned but bare in mind the car will be harder to sell, harder to trade in, always worth less, possibly harder to insure, so bare that in mind before parting with cash.

Me personally I think Cat D’s are okay if they are got at a very good price and if your planning on keeping the car for a very long time. Others will say different and tell you to run a mile

If the damage was enough for the insurance company to write it off as uneconomical it was more than a scratch on the bumper.

The guy said it was minor and wasnt reported, he gave me an Irish and UK check report which notes no record of category damage, but the report only covers Category A/B in Ireland

It was definitely reported if it shows up as category d. Maybe it was repaired in Ireland after import or else more damage occured over here that wasn't reported.

Category D would be for UK only I believe

If you ever plan on selling again I'd be looking at a different car

This is incorrect, Cat Ds can be structurally damaged. The old classification was nothing to do with safety and was solely a financial classification.

It was only a scratch on the bumper or a small tip seems to be a term used all too commonly by fellas selling UK Cat D or C cars over here these days. Unless they can produce a genuine insurance report detailing what they are claiming then I'd take that with a pinch of salt. And when it comes to car dealers there is no such thing as a friend of a friend imo. Business never becomes personal.

Decided not to go with the car. The price remained the same for his version of a minor bump not reported to a category D that was clearly reported, plus any value im getting at this end I would lose in potential trade in value at the other end.

Something to note though, he said the report he gave me was from Motorcheck (dont see a name on the report) but it only lists Category A & B in Ireland )

    Right decision.

Motorcheck as far as I remember will list category d reports too. I've done them myself in the past . Weird his only shows a and b categories hmmm

Wise. I'd say it was crashed twice, once in UK, once in Ireland
