NCT, tax, insurance: Sequence of event

Just want to make sure I don't get into trouble with the long arm of the law, hopefully someone can confirm for me.

Missus got a second hand car just before the lockdown. It has been sitting on the driveway since and we want to get it back moving soon.

Per the title, everything is out. So is the following the right sequence of event that I need to put in place.

    1. Book for NCT in advance.
    2. Renew tax online a few weeks before NCT (and wait for cert)
    3. Get a trailer to bring to test center or use my own insurance policy (My own cover include Driving Other's Car) to bring to NCT center for the test (The latter is not ideal in the eye of the law. NCT centre is 6 km away).
    4. On passing, insure the car in her own name.

    Am I missing anything?

Honest question as I don't know the answer, but for you to be insured third party on another car does that car not need to be insured in it's own right?

I'm not sure to be honest, I think I better check my policy wording to see if there is anything there (and ring the insurer and ask).. My initial thought was just to call and do a temporary transfer for a few hours as worst case (It will be like using a courtesy car with car dealers when going for repairs).

Technically you won’t be insured as a. it may need an active insurance policy and b. it will need be road worthy and have a valid NCT. Me personally I’d still drive it on the third party extension but just letting you know it’s unlikely you’ll actually be covered

    Exactly my thoughts .
A lot of third party extensions require a policy on the car you are driving.
    No valid nct.
Shouldnt be able to tax a car without insurance on it but you can enter any number when taxing.

Personally id probably chance it but to be fully right it should be trailered to the test.
And just be aware that the car could fail the test.
If it did fail its probably not roadworthy and an insurance issue

If your missus is your wife then you might want to check this bit with your own insurance company as they won't cover you to drive other cars that you own and they might see you and a spouse as being one entity for insurance purposes ie you both stand to lose if "her" car is damaged or destroyed. Just double check with them rather than assuming it's fine.

Thanks all for the feedback, i completely forgot that you can't tax without insurance..

OK, looks like trailer may be the only choice to NCT, then insurance, then tax in that order :(

there is no issue taxing it first. nct and insurance are not required to tax a car

Is it declared off the road now? If it is don't tax it until you get nct sorted ;)

Actually even if it is not declared off the road don't tax it if you trailer it.

You don't need tax now. Wait until you need it. Preferably at start of new month as your nct appointment will probably be closer to September than August anyway.
