Someone I am close to is looking at a possible court case and the person they are dealing is not honest. They are well-practised at lying and can be very convincing. In a court situation, especially if the case was going against them, I could imagine them lying if they got away with it.
I was reading through this to try and learn about it

I'd just like to know how it works in Ireland, or what's happened in the past when someone lies, or is accused of lying etc ?

If someone for example says they made a call or sent a message that they didn't, would a judge ask for proof? Or could the other person interject to say they are lying? Whose responsibility is it to prove it's true or not?

Sorry if these are basic questions. I have no experience of court.
    Thanks.

It is not a question of a judge asking for proof. A person gives oral evidence after which they can be cross examined by the other side. At that stage it can be put to them that they never made a call or sent the message.
An cross examiner may be able to catch the person out in a lie or otherwise undermine their evidence.
Some lawyers are experienced in cross examination and often catch people out in lies.
