As I understand it, legal arguments are based on both the actual legislation and precedents that have been set by its interpretation in previous cases. Is there somewhere that one can find, say, an index of or access to the cases relating to a particular topic?

A good textbook on any give topic will contain references to the relevant case law and statutory provisions. The judgments will generally refer to the relevant cases. There are online databases which will show the subsequent citing of a particular case.

For Irish Law, as Claw Hammer has said, a good text book is a great start.
Conor Hanly for Criminal Law and Byrne and McCutcheon for a smattering of everything from Civil, Constitutional and Criminal are good starts IMO.

Many noteworthy cases will also be written as a case report available through legal publishers and databases such as Westlaw, Justis and other subscription databases.

There are some free options to review and read at https://libguides.ucd.ie/law/websites

Bailii.org irlii.org and courts.ie all have some good resources too.
