Selling - uninsured and untaxed

Bought a new car just before the lockdown with the intention of selling my old car. transferred my insurance over to new car and old car had tax up until end of June. With lockdown, had no interest in the car.
Want to try and sell again. As tax is up I thought car would be more desirable to sellers if it was taxed for a few months but as it’s not insured, not sure if I can technically tax it. Don’t believe I can declare off the road as needs to be done before tax expires And for a period of 3 months.

Was considering taxing it using the details of my new car insurance policy - not sure if that would work tho.

Anyone had this issue before? Any suggestions?

you can put any info into the "insurance" part of the motor tax website, I always tax all cars online (4 a year) and just choose the first name (insurer) that comes up and type in a load of random letters or numbers. makes no difference, you can still tax the vehicle

Thanks Roy - I was wondering if there would be any complications with this. Never really got why needed. Good to know tho, thanks for the response.

    Same

I'm never bothered digging out the insurance cert to check.

I still remember my first insurance policy number from 2001 and I just use that. Have never had an issue.

You can sign off the road and tax it again at any time.... Minimum time to sign is 3 months as you say but you could change your mind in 2 weeks and tax it no issues.

If your selling it just put it up.

State there is 3 months tax if you like and throw it on for sale but no point taxing it and it sitting there and it take 6 months to sell.

Is there a way to sign it off the road if the tax has already expired?

Don’t bother taxing it just say ‘3 months tax’ in the add and give the buyer €50 to put towards 3 months tax

Or don’t. It really won’t make a difference

Madness taxing it now. You would be paying for july for no reason and also possibly august if it fails to sell quickly. Thats just throwing money away. The new owner wont have to back tax so just leave it.
