Well lads. I have a 2007 1.8 petrol opel vectra that's starting to use a good bit of oil. It's got 198,000 km on it. About a litre in less than 1000 km or so. No signs of leaks, no blue smoke and it drives fine. I've put a good few bob into it with new fuel filter, fuel pump, battery etc. Just flew through the nct with no issues. I like the car alot. Loads of room, comfortable and good on juice. Would it be worth investigating the issue or just cut my losses and get something else?

If you like it just bite the bullet on the cost of a 5 litre bottle of oil and drive her on for another 5,000k.

Currently running 5w30 oil in it. Worth using 10w40 since its a bit thicker?

I'd think so. I had a similiar issue with an Avensis before and 10W40 stopped the issue.

Don't think it will make any difference.

It's odd because there's no visible signs of leaks or oil being burnt. Engine is bone dry, coolant is clear. I've even had mates drive behind me and accelerated hard to see if there's any sign of blue smoke. Nothing.

Just keep putting oil in to it and factor in that at next NCT it might be a lost cause if emissions are bad but wait until then to find out, if possible do the test 3 months early to allow you time to source a new car.

It literally passed the nct 2 weeks ago. Valid until September next year. Emissions were perfect. The nct tester even commented on the excellent condition of the car..

As said earlier.. buy a 5L bottle of oil... In fact, buy 2.

And if Halfords are doing a 3 for 2 offer.. buy 3

Most manufacturers won't look at a car burning that amount of oil so keep it topped up and drive on, anything you replace it with is a gamble

    Oil level or oil pressure?

When was it changed last? And how long before the next change is due? If it was within a thousand or so to the next change, do the change even if its a bit early, oil and filter, and use the 10-40 oil. Make sure that its filled with the correct amount. Then monitor it weekly, and always make sure that the car is perfectly level, use a spirit level if you have one, and personally, I always dip it in the mornings before starting it.

just top it up, run it til it stops. Oil is a consumable.

I'm not really sure if you're saying it's been using oil for a long time or if it's just used a litre over the past 1000km.

I serviced it about 5,000km ago. I'll change it soon with 10w40 instead of the 5w30 I was using.

It's only in the past few weeks that it's been using a lot of oil. Was fine before that.

For whatever reason the oil pressure light came on, so it was low in oil. Like I said change it, ( no need to change the filter, if it has only done 5'000 Klms ) and make sure that it's up to the correct mark on the dipstick when refilling it. If at all possible, check the level each time with the car parked in the same place, and 1st thing in the morning, before starting the engine. Would be a good idea to write down the mileage and date each time you check it,,,say every Sat/Sun morning? That way, you will get some idea about the scale of the problem. Good Luck !! :)

So I serviced it yesterday. Put some liqui moly engine cleaner through it for 30 minutes then changed the filter and oil to 10w40. The amount of crap that came out was disturbing. The filter was full of black sludge. Anyway it was filled up at 199,000 km. Seems to be driving a bit smoother after the service. Just have to wait and see if it makes any difference. Cheers for the advice lads.
