Is there still a shortage of bicycles?

I'm going to be honest, the reason I ask I recently got into cycling, I managed to get myself a good bike for a good price but I've sold a few things and I'm thinking of upgrading..

The honesty comes in here - I'd probably get more for my bike now that later on, if there actually is still a shortage.

I'd be planning on moving up to the €2k+ range so I'd somewhat avoid the general market of looking for a cheap road bike..

    Is there still a shortage?

lots of bike boxes in the shops i've passed (e.g. duff cycles in santry, 360 cycles on the coast road).
from what i've heard, the real shortages were in relation to women's bikes, and bikes comfortably under a grand.

don't forget, the availability of the cycle to work scheme has had a noticeable effect on S/H bike values; if someone is on the higher marginal rate, why would they pay (say) €500 for a secondhand bike which originally cost €1k, when they can get a €1k bike new for about €500, with the benefit of the payments spread over the year.

or to respond another way - why do you want to upgrade?

    I see I see.
My local bike shop stopped taking in repairs and maintenance last month due to a massive back log, and they sold out of almost everything

I want to change because I'm enjoying cycling, I've got some extra cash burning a hole in my pocket and I'm sure it'll make me go faster

All very valid reasons to upgrade, however if your current bike is serving you well and comfortable you could consider just upgrading the wheels, often that's the place the biggest compromises are made in building a bike to a budget. Spend some of those funds on new wheels and it'll feel like a new bike.

Shops are getting shipments weekly so stock is coming in. 2021 bikes are being released over the next couple of months.

Yes, several bike shops received large shipments last week.

I just bought online with one of the online only crowd - 2 weeks the site said, as soon as the order went through it went up to 7 weeks (obs no stock, on backorder from china).

Not really happy as its not even a new model year (I think they release every 2 years).

Not everyone has a job that will provide them access to cycle to work. If you have the cash, you enjoy cycling, and want a new bike, there is no better reason to upgrade. If your bike sells great, if not keep it for bad weather days or cycling to the pub.

3.6 billion in the EU alone?

Mine is due in August, but that model was released early for the 2021 range. Some of the bigger sizes were snapped up straight away. I'm in no rush anyway.

I was the same few weeks back. I had a €1200 bike that I got second hand for 600. Lovely bike, cube nuroad 2018 that was hardly cycled.

I sold my motorbike and had just over 2k. I bit the bullet and bought a giant defy advanced 2 brand new. Best thing I ever done. The difference between the bikes are night and day on every level.

Drove by Duff Cycles in Santry earlier, there must have been about 50 boxes of new bicycles outside.

95% of them either adult leisure or kid's bikes I'd guess.

I would be applying to the specialist road bikes stores if you're serious about getting a performance road bike Mr. Miata.

there used to be a little phone repair place (i think that's what it was) beside them, which they have taken over and seem to also have full of bike boxes.

note - 'specialist' and 'specialized' can mean two different things here.
