Prince2 qualification as an avenue to a career change

I'm 9 years working as a civil engineering consultant, and have been thinking of getting out of the industry for quite a while.

Thinking of pursuing a project management role away from contracting and consulting - either the client side or in another industry altogether (finance most likely - IT might be a bit of a stretch).

Having plenty of PM experience, but no formal PM qualification - and I'm thinking of obtaining Prince2 foundation/practitioner.

Training and exams come to about €900. It won't break the bank, but isn't an insignificant sum. With a career chance in mind, would the qualification be worth it, or a waste of time and money?

Not a waste of time or money. It'll get you past the HR drones.

But in reality the job of project manager has almost nothing to do with anything you'll learn in prince2.

Yeah I'm under no illusion as to how useful Prince2 may be in a practical sense. Really just want a qualification on the CV to get the foot in the door.

AFAIK, courses on ecollege.ie are free at the moment (due to Covid-19) and I see there is a Prince2 foundation course on there. Perhaps that would save you some money.

If you're going to do it, do it properly and do a 5 day course. The stuff you will learn is invaluable, not least, how to answer the questions and what you need to know.

Yeah I'll definitely be doing the 5-day course. Seems like the smart way to go about gaining the qualification.

Agree with most of this. I work in Pharma/ biomed so might be different in other industries, but from my perspective it might get you past HR but you would not be hired due to lack of industry experience by the hiring managers.

P2 helps more imo to move up the ladder once already in the door.

I ended up being over qualified for iT PM jobs and they were afraid to touch me
