My Dad’s licence expires 7 August.
Earliest appointment at NDLS is 29 August (I will drive him down)
Needs medical report as over 70.
This needs to be signed off in the one month period preceeding the application.
Should he get appointment with Doctor done before current licence expires (say 1-7 August) or does it matter if done closer to the time i.e towards end of August.

Once the report is within a month of the application then it will be fine.
It is the new application date here that is key, not the expiry date of the licence.
I would get the report mid August, but check in case his GP is going on holidays.

Driving on an expired licence is considered to be a very minor offence and completely different from driving without a licence (i.e. never having had a licence). The regulations may have changed but it used to be possible to drive for up to 10 years on an expired licence before having to go back to square one.
