I have a Samsung A10 with SD card installed. Today all of a sudden, the apps stored on the SD card icons on my phone are 'greyed out' with the 'SD symbol & unusable.

What is causing this? Do I just need a new SD card?

Have you tried restarting the phone or removing and reinserting the card? Possibly a faulty card but could be the os just acting up either. Saving apps to external cards has never really been a success in my opinion. It's the reason I never go for less than 64GB internal storage.

Thanks its a brand new phone and 32 gb card with 32gb internal memory. No problems with phone up until today when I had to replace my original SD because with old SD the apps became greyed out and unusable.
When I inserted new card I had to re download all apps that were stored on old card. Is this normal to need to redownload when changing to a new SD?

You install some apps on an SD card and then are confused why they are greyed out if you replace the SD card? It's because they were only installed on the last SD card you had in there. As I said above, saving to SD card can be hit and miss. If at all possible just install them all to the internal storage and save your SD card for pictures etc but also have them backed up to Google photos in case the SD card ever corrupts.
