Number plates - aluminium printed but not pressed

    Hi all,

After someone happily decided to back into my front number plate with their hitch I've decided to go about getting a replacement.

I'm a fan of the plates that are on the car. I thought they were originally a very high quality plastic but it turns out they were aluminium; but not the kind where the letters/numbers are pressed/raised but more like a standard plate where the information is printed.

The dealer that supplied the car is up the country and a long trip - I took a look online but all the sites seem to only offer aluminium plates with the pressed effect. Is there anywhere I can get number plates like this as most acrylic plates I've bought often fade from white to a dull cream in a matter of months.

Also - and I'll acknowledge that this is a ridiculous question - but why do some people not bother taking the blue plastic off their plastic number plates when they mount them. Is there a reason for it as regards UV resistance or the like? Or have I really missed the boat and that stuff is meant to stay on them instead of peeled off before being mounted.

Anyone any recommendations for this style of plate or high quality acrylic alternatives?

Thanks for the help as always!

I have never seen that type of plate you are describing.
I have bought plastic plates from www.irishnumberplates.ie in the past and never had problems with fading though.

Is this a standard blank aluminium number plate, with the numbers being stickers ?

As a new user, I can't post links but google printpoint - they do them.

@mikeecho - these aluminium plates are practically indistinguishable from plastic unless you look closely - I only found out that my car had them when I took off the rear one on my car to level it.

Bolands in Carlow fit them so maybe ring them if you don't have any luck with your own dealer. Their parts dept is very helpful and may be able to do something for you.

Good find. These seem to match OP's description.
