Playing for a fiver.

    :D

Any good betting stories - or anyone know lads who play for a bigger than the fiver - the famous old fiver , seems to be bullet proof, Brexit proof, recession proof , inflation proof, covid proof. Wonder when it will become a tenner.

Was playing with new lads the other day was gas, the full ritual around, will he play for a fiver :D - lads going on as if it is a judge of character or something. Half them don't even pay up after making such a song and dance about it. :D

Actually heard an old lad say - is your man sound, like would he play for a fiver - as if it confirmed you as a member of fight club :p

    A ****ing fiver (lol)

So played with these dudes last week - some convoluted version of skins - where you need to win two holes in a row. Daft game , and of course , I'm holing from all over the shop - and one of the lads was actually a bit freaky competitive - he was calling me a "c£$t" - a "****" :D - He kinda knew I could take it, but he didn't really know me - was mad.

He didn't know that once he went on like that - I'm more a headcase than him - he started getting cranky wouldn't even talk to anyone and was completely sick giving me the 10 quid at the end. I would never go after a lad for money , but I would have actually asked this bloke.

To be honest I was breaking my balls trying to play to my handicap and your man was going on as if it was the Ryder Cup for a fiver. :D

No - fair play to him , seems to keep him on edge in a game.

But he wasn't repairing divots - was pushing his bag over tee boxes - and that stuff would get me more excited.

Anyway - I get the fiver thing a bit of crack , but that is way OTT - and anyway there seems to be more a place for it when it is casual .

    Any views.

I won't name names - but know a certain bloke who plays people for a fiver - but only certain people :D

It would be common enough if I join a group of three in a competition. Usually pair off and €1 for the front,€1 for the back and €1 for the overall best round. Played one the other week where it was 50c for birdies too.

Small money is fine by me, it keeps you there even if the round isn't going your way but I'd never look for the money at the end tbh.

You should come play the big leagues with me ... €2 front, €2 back and €2 overall :)

Played for a fiver today and never got paid.

Only thing - not sure if the fiver was a joke or not.

Was told today of a fiver, front , back and overall - with a fiver for all 3 making it 20.

You'd only play that with certain partners though ;)

Ah this was in Louth, I'm sure if I was in another county it'd be more :D

Didn't bother me taking the 3.50 anyhow haha

I was on holidays and seen €50 front and €50 back but they looked like they could afford it.

As Brendan grace, god be good to him would say,
“If you say the word fiver again,I’ll put your head through the wall”.

Rarely play for money but joined a group a few weeks back on a Sunday morning I knew one of the lads but not the other two.
The lad I knew came over to me on the putting green and said the other two lads normally play for 5e front 5e back and 1e birdies and 1e sand saves gave me option to join or stay out of it if I wasn't comfortable. I joined and lost a few euro. Still enjoyable and added to the banter.

With my regular 4ball we play 2 front , 2. Back and 3 overall. 1euro birdies, greenies and sandies with greenies carried forward if not won.

Used to enjoy a pound a pound a pound back in the day. Sometimes do the same with two euros now but not as much. Never into the heavy stuff, as I feel that spoils really focusing our your golf and the competition for the money becomes the thing. Never liked oozlers and foozlers and ferrets and the likes either.
You need to watch these days in case your playing with any muslims because its banned in that and you dont want to offend them by asking or then just having it between some of the group and leaving them out which can be aukward.

2front,2back,2 overall plus 2for any 2s,and 5 for a hole in 1. The 5 has never been won and the 2for2s maybe every 3 rounds, it adds a bit of crack to the round

€2 front, €2back and €2 overall is our regular game

Sometimes we can convince one of the lads and we go 5,5,5

If any of them is halved then no money to anyone which is nice as one lad won the front by 2 and another the back by 2 so they split the overall which kept me interested up the last today so my terrible golf only cost me 10 rather 15 today

Played a lot of skins in the earlier phases of reopening when we only had casual play and I enjoyed it. We only do 50 cents a hole and its close enough most of the time so you might be losing 2 or 3 Euros if it goes bad. Had a few 666's too. Doesn't matter if its small money or not you get a bit of a buzz and a bit of banter and a laugh when after a few ties there's 4 or 5 skins on a hole.

Is the five front, back and overall - 3 players put a 5er in each?

5er per player for best front 9 score, 5er per player for best back 9 score and 5er per player for best overall score so potentially a 15er hit if you have a bad day :)

Generally though the scoring is spread across front/back 9 so a 5er won can be offset against a 5er lost

We sometimes play the "Brucie" so if you win all 3 its another 5er.

I like the fiver bet, it is something to play for even if your card is a disaster and does get a bit of banter going in the group. I rarely accept and always offer it at the end of the round.

Only once did I make a point of getting it, myself and a friend were joined by 2 members in Westport GC a few years back. One was so unpleasant to play with, his partner offered the fiver to my partner walking off the 18th, the other said he was in a rush and had to go, just as he was getting in his car I asked for my fiver, he grudgingly gave it to me asking if I was that hard up. I walked back to the bar with a big smile on my face, best fiver I have ever won.

I used to play with the same people I'd be heading to the pub with that evening when I was young. We'd play for a pint. In reality, the person who finished last would get the first round, and the person who finished first would get the last. Depending on the day it would be worth the cost of a round to you.

But i like that it makes you play properly to be honest. If not I'm casual rounds I'll be tempted not to play out of a divot or the like. If there's a pint on the line I'll have to play honest.

This is exactly what we played for all our rounds before competitions came back. We had some great ones!!! You can have a sh1t hole then pray the other two boys have a half :D:D:D:D:D:D
One sunday I remember there was ten skins on the 10th hole.
    No I didn't win them.

My 4 ball does this but we also add 2 for longest drive and 2 for nearest the pin on a couple of pre-selected holes. It mostly works out fairly evenly over time that one has a bad day, one has a great day and the other 2 fight over scraps.

Whoever wins usually buys a pint at the 19th for everyone, apart from one of lads who is as tight as a piano string and makes his excuse to leave when he wins.

    Would normally do, 2, 2, 2

Sometimes 50c or 1 euro skins.

Defo focuses you. Hadn't won a skin after 14 holes. Played really well at the end to reduce the damage.

Also, play "Snake" not sure why it's called that. If you have a 3-putt you hold the snake. Then whoever holds it at the end pays up. Again the pressure if you mess up the first putt.

I've heard of mad money like a dollar a yard skins. That's just madness.

Think the fiver max makes it fun without pressurising people to spend more than they are comfortable.

    Normally 2, 2, 2 as well.

My personal favourite story is a Michael Jordan quote:
Playing with Gary Liniker in Sunningdale - Friend of Gary's (Queeny) asked Jordan will we have a bet - Jordan lives to bet,

Queeny: "So Michael would you like bet, a little wager?"
    Michael says: "Sure, man."
Queeny says: "So how much would you like to play for?"
Michael puffs on his cigar, looks straight at him, smiles and says: "Whatever makes you feel uncomfortable, man."

Has anyone ever played a “Press’ wager?

I had the misfortune of playing a version of it called Automatic Press which starts a new wager automatically after every hole in a pro am. Eye watering win/loss at the end.

Ben Dunne tells a good story of his younger days . While in the US he ends up being paired at some country club with a high roller that he has never met before . Dunne asked the high roller does he want to play for a few quid . The high roller politely tells him that he doesn’t bet on golf . Dunne being young and brash needles him a bit more to take the bait . The high roller , a little annoyed at this stage turns to him and asks Dunne, how much he is worth ? Dunne , a little taken aback replies about 15 million, to which the high roller casually replies , ok so let’s play for that . Dunne wasn’t long shutting up then

The Daniel Negreanu episode on the No Laying Up podcast is great for a few golf betting stories.
    Episode 235 for anyone interested
