Last week I imported a 2016 Vw Golf GTD from the UK. Fabulous car, been looking for one for ages. I'm also thinking of having it re-mapped but I've never done this to a car before and don't know a while pile about the side effects it might have if any. Obviously there will be an increase in power but can somebody give me the pros and cons of re-mapping please before I go ahead with anything? Thanks folks

Drop George Dalton a pm here. He's a vw specialist including mapping, servicing, upgrades etc. You'll get the best advice possible. Lots of happy customers of his on this forum and I'm one of them. Very helpful.

Definitely remap but i would advise driving it as standard for a while A. you'll appreciate the map more and B. it's a new to you car so drive it and see if any problems surface otherwise you or your mechanic will blame any problems that come up on the remap.

Also a remap is only as good as the mapper so go reputable like George or Joe Power.

Yeah, that's decent advice. I'll probably wait til the new year in case any issues arise with the car.

    Daltons are revo distributors.

Joe power will remap it himself with the option to put it on a rolling road.

Torquetronix do a fair bit of business too as do autotune in ballymena both also have rolling roads and have been on the go a while.

I've no actual experience with any of the above though so I couldn't make any comment.

the autostadt.ie page on facebook would be a good place to ask as plenty will have had first hand experience.

Standard stage 1 maps will see decent gains anything much more than that will need mods such as dpf delete (not really an easy job on mk7 golfs) egr blanked etc.

It's Tossys first bit of advice is worth taking note of, get to know you car, there's no rush on upping the power until you feel it needs more, took me nearly a year in my GTI, if you want to upgrade anything start with the tyres. You'll need decent threads if your going for more power anyway.

Hate to dampen the mood but you need to consider the insurance situation op.

I’m looking to import a gtd at the minute as well!
How did you buy it ie Did you get to see the car before purchasing? And How did you pay for it?

I bought it from V12 sports and classics in Luton. Paid a deposit which is refundable. Checked out the history of the car before transferring the full amount by bank transfer. Dealt with the sales agents by phone. Very easy to deal with and loads of info given over by the garage. Highly recommended

I would suggest a Superchips Bluefin remap.
It allows you to remove it and add it back on whenever you want to.

In certain countries, one can order a VW Golf from factory with a Superchips chip installed. So they are trusted.

In this case however, with Bluefin, its a remap of the existing chip/ecu. They ship you out a module, you plug it in, copy the current map, upload it to them. They return the updated file which you load.
    Takes 30mins.
Switching back & forth subsequently takes 5mins.

Its something to try before you decide to take it somewhere else to be remapped.

Revo with the sps module would do the same with sales and support here. Revo map would be superior too.

Thanks for the info. Did you get the car delivered After paying or did you go over for it yourself?

I went over myself. €15 flight into Luton. £12 for a taxi straight to the showroom and then €300 for the sailing home although I went for the full ferry package including a cabin cos I was knackered after all the travelling. Saved roughly 4 grand compared to buying the same make, model, spec, mileage and year of the car.
