Large hatchback or estate?

Need to buy a car soon.

Driving a small hatchback and it's too small for what I need.
Looking at estates or large hatchback such as Octavia.

Have been looking at the following from 2012 on. Have a max budget of 8k.

Focus estate
Auris estate, hard to find
Avensis estate
i40 Estate

Would love an audi A4 avant estate, but guessing they'd cost a lot to service.

Had also considered some Suvs but not sure about them.

Any suggestions welcome

good question. I don't know yet if I'll be doing more or less driving. I work in Dublin but haven't been the past 5 months. been working from home. If I go back full time , I'll be living there and not driving much. If only 2/3 days per week then I'll commute , which is about 240km roundtrip

Which estate,

Avensis, focus, i40 or Octavia?

Not the Focus because of the engines, they’re a lottery imo.

Maybe the i40, because for the year, an early one is pretty good. Worries about gearbox/clutch though

Avensis wouldn’t be a bad shout, but they’re in no way as much of a safe bet as earlier generations

Octavia maybe, depending on which engine it has.

Have you considered a Skoda Yeti? 8k would pick up a tidy example. They're extremely versatile especially if you're going to be carrying a wheelchair etc. Very comfortable too.

Then volvo v50 might be perfect.

Went away in 2012, but a lot of car for small money. Comfortable, Low tax and surprisingly economical.

In the world of wheelchairs and walking frames it can be a great help to have something with a seat that isnt low...So maybe a Yeti over a V50.

FWIW I've a friend whose mother is in this position. They got approval for VRT relief and bought a 3008 with a front seat that can rotate. Boot takes the wheelchair with ease. They seem very happy with the setup.

The V50 has quite a small boot. Octavia Estate has 50% more volume.

My Dad is in a nursing home now. If he was at home I could avail of that relief, but now that he isn't at home I can't apply for it. Its to take him out on the weekends, whenever that will happen. Hopefully soon. I also do a bit of cycling so it would help loading my bike

They’re a ball. That 2.2 engine is best avoided.

Id second the megane estate, very large boot, flat bootlip, passenger seat height is reasonably high for an estate. The 1.5 diesel is doing the rounds for years and is rock solid.

The spec is generally good, the limited has cruise, bluetooth, full glass roof etc

I was talking to a guard recently, he said they are one of the most uncomfortable cars he has ever sat in. Back does be in bits when he finishes a shift. He'd be in it for hours at a time but still.
