I'm due to be offered a new contract of employment in Public Sector. I'm just wondering as an existing employee who will be staying at same grade, what may be negotiable?

Hi Snoopsheep, it's effectively a new role, job title has changed, as has the job description and direct line manager.

If no change of grade it would not be considered a promotion so same T& C apply

Hi P2C, but it's changing from a specified purpose contract to a Fixed contract. Surely if same T & C apply, they wouldn't be sending me another contract to sign?

The fixed contract will be for just say 1-3 years or for a specific task then it will end. Your specified purpose contract has probably run its course or again is time bound for a specific purpose. They are keeping you on or you applied for a new job and it’s fixed term. Therefore new contract but same conditions. Every job has a number.

Public sector contracts are standardised and the same t&c’s for everyone with exceptions on salary scale depending on previous experience depending on weather it’s in the public or private. I went up a grade recently after 15 years as a VI to a VII. I lost 3days annual leave. I gained 2hrs extra work per week and I went from top of VI scale to next point plus 1 on the VII scale. The only promotion I have heard of that your hourly rate goes down. There is little to no room for negotiation. although the conditions of employment are generally very good
